The third day of our hiking trip to Czech Beskidy Mts was Poland’s Independence Day. There was a grass-roots initiative to stop on that day at 12:00 and sing the national anthem.
My party of 10 were at Ropička mountain cabin at midday. We stood up and sang the complete anthem. Another group was passing by and they happened to be Polish, so they sang with us.
The place was a good scene for the anthem - in 1913 (when both Poland and Czechia were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), a Polish Tourist Society „Beskidy” built their first mountain hut. It was the second overall Beskidy mountain cabin built by Polish hikers. That building didn’t survive long. The present hut was built in 1924 by Czechoslovakian Tourists Club.
