Life can present unanticipated presents occasionally.
One of those days was today.
Weary from last night, I woke up fearing the day.
Set for six thirty AM, my alarm clock appeared to mock my need for additional sleep.
Skipping work was unacceptable to someone who values duty.
Still, a lucky intervention took place.
A last-minute chance presented itself to take morning off.
I welcomed the gift of extra sleep with thanks, savoring a much-needed 2.5-hour nap.
Rising at nine in the morning, I became aware of how frequently I ignore my need for sleep.
In our society, napping during lunch breaks is not possible, hence I usually go for peace and quiet by myself.
Having unexpected free morning, I made self-care top priority.
I went to the gym and, under my trainer's direction, investigated new workouts, especially emphasizing leg strength.
Targeting my hamstrings efficiently, the sitting leg extension machine became a new favorite.
Additionally a fun and difficult exercise were the wire kickbacks.
Still, the evening had different plans.
A theater trip with coworkers turned into a solemn event.
Though thought-provoking, the three one-act pieces were somewhat sad.
That was quite different from the positive beginning of the day.
The sadness was helped to fade by a revitalizing bike trip home.
Riding, I thought back on the different events of the day, appreciative of the unplanned gift of sleep and the chance to give self-care top priority.
Wishing you all the best in life and much health.
