the housemate and i decided to go out for lunch.
it was a bit cloudy, so we brought our umbrellas with us.
somehow, i convinced him to go for a 4km walk to the town next door, kita-senju.
here are the three highlights of the noon walk (not a nightwalker for today).
ramen
japan is known for ramen, and this dish does not need any introductions, i suppose.
ramen is one of the things you can mention when talking about japan.
so for today, we tried out karen (the good type of karen).
it was a very small shop, all counter seats.
one could see how everything was prepared right in front of you.
we ordered the "special" one worth 1150 yen (around 7 usd).
all their ramen is niboshi based, soup stock was made from dried japanese anchovies.
and the noodle was topped with nori seaweeds, boiled egg, pork and chicken slices, and onions.
the soup had a slightly fishy taste which was complemented by the onions.
i liked this simple tasting ramen a lot that i was able to consume the soup as well.
great find indeed!
google map location in here.
the shop also has an x (former twitter) page in here.
coffee time
we roamed the place a bit and stumbled at a coffee shop.
shanty, was also a small shop with around 5 mini tables and 2 counter seats.
they were clearly plant lovers from what i could see outside.
they had 3 staff members, two of which seemed like the owners, both of advanced age.
and they serve as the main baristas, a charming but accomplished couple.
they had this aura of wisdom and joy in what they do, i couldn't stop looking at them.
the interior felt like you were transported back in time, very retro yet very cozy and homey.
i guess the coffee aroma also helped establishing the mood.
i guess the shop owners also helped, a feeling you get when you visit your grandparents.
i ended up having a regular blended coffee with a little milk, and homemade chocolate cake.
very tasty for a very affordable price of 850 yen (around 5 usd).
the place was ideal for a short snack, you wouldn't dare to stay long in such a small shop.
queues were waiting outside.
this small shop warmed my heart, allowed me to feel contentment even in just a short time.
google map location here.
and you can check more about the shop in their website here.
way home
we decided to proceed walking on the way home as well.
i have previously walked this path as a nightwalker before and you can check that post below.
towards kita senju... towards oven season: June 21 2024 |
i certainly saw more details this time and of course, it was more lively.
people do not usually roam at night in fears of nightwalkers like me.
the park beside a school had many children, the school seemed to have an ongoing sports program.
the walkways were extra wide now that i can see everything.
what is worse though, you can now see some floating trash in the river.
at on point, we saw a bunch of kids riding small bikes.
they rearranged themselves, this passenger on the bike on the right transferred to bike on the left.
and to compensate the weight, the rightmost bike carried the bag.
what was ahead was a downhill slope.
as we were walking, this bike on the left, now carrying two children passed by and lost balance.
it was an accident, these two children fell right in front of our eyes.
the driver seemed hurt and started to sob at first.
but the other two immediately came and comforted with the usual daijoubu (are you ok?).
as foreigners and adults, it was a very difficult situation to be in.
we ended up parking the bike upright, checked for any injuries a bit and left.
that was enough to get the usual arigatou gozaimasu from these kids, but deep down i was very conflicted.
i kept on looking back as we continued walking, they haven't left the spot until i couldn't see them anymore.
i am pretty sure that they will all just laugh about this in the future, but what would have been the best way to deal with this situation?
the complete journey took 8 km, a little over 4 hours of walking.
it was a very productive sunday.

Awesome that you were able to talk to your friend into a walk with you, my friend!👍
Very cozy coffee shop after a delicious meal !😊
Now you have me thinking about Ramen for lunch ….Yum!
i vote 1 ramen for lunch.
my friend was about to give up halfway, talked him through the walk. he must have forgotten that he was tired.
Glad he had you to encourage him my friend!😊
I think I’m going to eat 2 Raman meals today for lunch ….. I’m really hungry Lol!☺️
good luck with that
We always keep boxes of Ramen on hand, delicious meals!😊
also good emergency food, when you forgot to do the groceries or forgot to turn on the ref and all things got spoil. (so random but this happened to me. hahah)
Definitely good to keep on hand, a quick easy meal!🤗👍😊
