First day of a new job for my wife. I said I would get up earlier - I did manage that as the sky was clear. Am really struggling to deal with the lack of free. Normally I would start a fitness program to get fit for a big October bike ride. Under current rules, I can go 8 kms from home in one direction and less in others. Not exactly free.
I exiled myself from apartheid South Africa in 1987 to get away from this sort of shit. This is worse - in my state more people die in car accidents each year.
I did get in the car to continue my mission of walking every track. Today the plan was to walk down this track to overlap where I walked along the creek earlier in the week. I was hoping to find summer orchids up top. None.
Pink wax flower showing stages of opening
Each flash of purple gets my eye hoping for sun orchids. For my friend Landie who loves purple.
3 sided seed which I am sure will fly in the wind like a helicopter
Mini flannel flower shows off amazing textures in a flower so small.
The pointy rock says go that way down to the creek. There may be orchids.
High level view across the creek. They have built a new path with easy rock stairs since I last did this.
A tranquil spot looking up the creek
And great reflections again looking down. Last time I was looking up to this spot.
This is a sad happy photo. I loved the textures on these small flowers. Sad = out of focus. Happy is the amazing mosaic pattern for the stem = wow.
I was going to keep walking until I found the one orchid for the day. I was really focusing in the undergrowth in case I missed a greenhood last week. I had not but I did reach the tall greenhoods. Of the four plants different ones were flowering
I did get an orchid convert right here. This one is either opening or closing - guessing opening as there was a bud up the spike - bunochilus longifolius. Time to turn around
There were a lot of acianthus leaves. I spied one flower spike flat - it was just opening. Not sure it will survive but it does count as the one new orchid for the day. Acianthus caudatus - mayfly orchid - new for this track
Time to reflect again on the power of freedom. We are not free but we can be free in nature. God knows.
Not the first time that a pea flower has greeted me at eye level as I walk back up from a creek.
The white of this flower caught my eye. It is smaller than a US penny across. Only when I zoomed in did I see the detail. Wow. I could not see that with the naked eye.
The 10,000 step marker came up in the walk. Two orchids - one new is a good reward. Two hours free too. And I did share the tall greenhoods with a Walker who will walk the bush with eyes open. That is a win too.
Did do some raking work. My garden has no trees but I rake a lot.
Dinner: Spaghetti bolognese - simple, takes time, yum
Trade action: Bought STU.V, NM. NM was up 45% last week. I had covered calls to protect - hopefully the magic medicine will keep me invested and stem any losses
