A peaceful morning working on the cabin roof in the forest [EN/FR]

Last Thursday evening, with @altheana, we left for our land, 300 km from our home. Over there, there is a small wooden cabin, a pond and 3000 m² of land bordered by a patch of woodland. We try to go there regularly to maintain the place and prevent everything from becoming wild again. One year ago, we had 11 trees cut down that we must now split and store, and the goal of this trip was precisely to make progress on that.

We arrived late Thursday evening. Fortunately, my aunt lives very close. That avoids us having to sleep in the cabin with the mice and other rodents.

Friday morning, after a quick breakfast, we changed clothes to head straight to the land. On the way down, I grabbed a ladder to climb onto the roof of the cabin. I know there is a leak around the passage of the wood stove, and I wanted to at least reduce it a bit.

At first glance, the land was beautiful. The grass had grown tremendously. Since we are on very damp soil, everything quickly becomes dense and lush. It has rained a lot these past few days and it has even been abnormally warm for the season.

What I love when we return to the cabin is rediscovering the tools and equipment we leave there. For example, we still had six tubes of silicone sealant, two of them never opened, perfect for repairing the roof. Since rain was forecast for the night, I started with that task.

I climbed up to check the condition of the roof. The stove outlet is surrounded by a black collar that protects a flexible flashing located just below. This flashing follows the waves of the metal sheet and, in theory, prevents water from entering.

But since the slope of the roof is too small, water stagnates in front of the flashing and always ends up slowly seeping in. It is never a huge amount, but ideally, it should stop completely. One day, I will redo the roof to correct the slope, but for now I do my best with sealant.

Rather than removing the black protective collar, I applied a sealant bead against it. It is not a perfect solution since water will stagnate higher up and will always end up finding another path, but it should greatly reduce the infiltration until our next visit.

Inside, I placed a pot under the leak to catch the drops instead of letting the water fall everywhere.

We then took advantage of the sun to take out the solar panel and recharge our battery. The cabin is completely off-grid, so everything runs thanks to it.

While I was taking care of the roof, @altheana cleaned the cabin. We had planned to sleep there that evening and we did not want to lie down in mouse droppings. When lifting the couch cover, she came across a pile of droppings much bigger than those of a mouse. We immediately thought of rats. So we took everything outside and decided to throw away the sofa bed. My aunt thinks they are more likely dormouse droppings or from another rodent, but not rats. In any case, sleeping on it was out of the question. We even carried the couch to her place to throw it away.

The problem was that we no longer had any furniture in front of the stove. Fortunately, a few minutes away by car there is a recycling shop where you can buy items at low prices. While going there, we found two armchairs in excellent condition, perfect for the cabin. We will be able to bring the cushions back home to prevent rodents from nesting inside.

Since it did not fit in the car, we had to make two trips. We also found two lamps that will go very well.

The result was really worth it. We love the atmosphere it creates.

While we were there, I took the opportunity to buy a handle for my scythe. I wanted a wooden handle, but it has become impossible to find one of decent quality. So I resigned myself to buying one in a big-box store. I always avoid that kind of purchase because mass-produced objects are rarely good quality, but we needed to move forward.

Between the cleaning, the roof repair and the car trips, the day flew by. In November, night falls quickly. In the end, we had not had time to split the wood as planned.

In the late afternoon, I still cut a few small logs for the fire. I lit the stove and we settled down in front of it.

It was 15 degrees outside, but inside, the temperature rose to twenty-five degrees within a few minutes. The wood-panelled walls do not retain the heat and the cabin has no insulation, so as soon as the fire goes out it becomes very cold again. But when the stove is running, it is incredibly comfortable.

We cooked on it before inflating our mattresses. Then we went to bed, ready for a more active day the next morning.

Jeudi soir dernier, avec @altheana, nous sommes partis sur notre terrain, à 300 km de chez nous. Là-bas, il y a une petite cabane en bois, un étang et 3000 m² de terrain bordé d’un sous-bois. Nous essayons d’y aller régulièrement pour entretenir l’endroit et éviter que tout ne redevienne sauvage. Il y a un an, nous avons fait abattre 11 arbres que nous devons maintenant fendre et ranger, et l’objectif de ce séjour était justement d’avancer là-dessus.

Nous sommes arrivés tard jeudi soir. Heureusement, ma tante habite tout près. Cela nous évite de dormir dans la cabane avec les souris et les autres rongeurs.

Vendredi matin, après un petit-déjeuner rapide, nous nous sommes changés pour filer directement sur le terrain. En descendant, j’ai pris une échelle pour monter sur le toit de la cabane. Je sais qu’il y a une fuite autour du passage du poêle à bois, et je voulais au moins l’atténuer un peu.

À première vue, le terrain était superbe. L’herbe avait énormément poussé. Comme nous sommes sur un sol très humide, tout devient vite dense et luxuriant. Il a beaucoup plu ces derniers jours et il a même fait anormalement chaud pour la saison.

Ce que j’aime quand on retourne dans la cabane, c’est redécouvrir les outils et le matériel qu’on laisse sur place. Par exemple, nous avions encore six cartouches de mastic silicone dont deux jamais ouvertes, parfait pour réparer le toit. Comme la pluie était prévue pour la nuit, j’ai commencé par cette tâche.

Je suis monté vérifier l’état du toit. La sortie du poêle est entourée d’une collerette noire qui protège un solin flexible situé juste en dessous. Ce solin épouse les ondulations de la tôle et, en théorie, empêche l’eau d’entrer.

Mais comme la pente du toit est trop faible, l’eau stagne devant le solin et finit toujours par s’infiltrer lentement. Ce n’est jamais énorme, mais idéalement, il faudrait que ça cesse complètement. Un jour, je referai le toit pour corriger la pente, mais pour l’instant je fais au mieux avec des joints.

Plutôt que de démonter la protection noire, j’ai appliqué un joint contre elle. Ce n’est pas une solution parfaite puisque l’eau stagnera plus haut et finira toujours par chercher un autre chemin, mais cela devrait réduire largement l’infiltration jusqu’à notre prochaine venue.

À l’intérieur, j’ai placé une casserole sous la fuite pour récupérer les gouttes au lieu de laisser l’eau tomber partout.

Nous avons ensuite profité du soleil pour sortir le panneau solaire et recharger notre batterie. La cabane est entièrement hors réseau, donc tout fonctionne grâce à elle.

Pendant que je m’occupais du toit, @altheana a fait le ménage dans la cabane. Nous avions prévu d’y dormir le soir et nous ne voulions pas nous allonger dans des crottes de souris. En soulevant la housse du canapé, elle est tombée sur un tas de crottes bien plus grosses que celles d’une souris. Nous avons directement pensé à des rats. Nous avons donc tout sorti et décidé de jeter le canapé-lit. Ma tante pense plutôt qu'il s’agit de crottes de loirs ou d’un autre rongeur, mais pas de rats. Dans tous les cas, dormir dessus était exclu. Nous avons même transporté le canapé jusque chez elle pour le mettre à la poubelle.

Le souci, c’est que nous n’avions plus aucun meuble devant le poêle. Heureusement, à quelques minutes de route se trouve une recyclerie où l’on peut acheter des objets à petit prix. En y allant, nous avons trouvé deux fauteuils en excellent état, parfaits pour la cabane. Nous pourrons ramener les coussins à la maison afin d’éviter que des rongeurs ne fassent leur nid dedans.

Comme ça ne rentrait pas dans la voiture, nous avons dû faire deux allers-retours. Nous avons aussi trouvé deux lampes qui iront très bien.

Le résultat en valait vraiment la peine. Nous adorons l’ambiance que ça donne.

Au passage, j’en ai profité pour acheter un manche pour ma faux. Je voulais un manche en bois, mais c’est devenu impossible à trouver dans une qualité correcte. Je me suis donc résigné à en prendre un en grande surface. J’évite toujours ce genre d’achat parce que les objets produits en masse sont rarement de bonne qualité, mais il fallait avancer.

Entre le ménage, la réparation du toit et les trajets en voiture, la journée a filé. En novembre, la nuit tombe vite. Nous n’avions finalement pas eu le temps de fendre le bois comme prévu.

En fin d’après-midi, j’ai quand même coupé quelques buchettes pour le feu. J’ai allumé le poêle et nous nous sommes installés devant.

Il faisait 15 degrés dehors, mais à l’intérieur, la température est montée à vingt-cinq degrés en quelques minutes. Les murs en lambris ne gardent pas la chaleur et la cabane n’a aucune isolation, donc dès que le feu s’éteint il fait de nouveau très froid. Mais quand le poêle fonctionne, c’est incroyablement confortable.

Nous avons cuisiné dessus avant de gonfler nos matelas. Puis nous nous sommes couchés, prêts pour une journée plus sportive le lendemain.
