Good evening Hivers friends,
The city of Brindisi is one of the least famous in the Puglia region, probably because it is often used merely as a "transit point", as it is home to the airport that connects Puglia to the rest of Italy and Europe. But Brindisi is much more.
The city saw its heyday during the Roman Empire, when its port served as the main commercial and military link with the East. During this period, the Romans built thermal baths, amphitheaters, an aqueduct, and schools. Unfortunately, many of these important buildings no longer exist or have changed significantly over the centuries.
Buonasera amici Hivers,

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Brindisi was ruled by an incredible series of figures: Greeks, Normans, Venetians, Spanish, Austrians, Bourbons, and more.
Each of these populations left an indelible mark of their passage, and all the archaeological finds can be visited in the city's main museums.
The city of Brindisi also played a key role during the First and Second World Wars. The city was bombed over 30 times by enemy air raids, and it took decades to restore the homes and buildings.

Walking around the city, I discovered something very interesting: for a brief period, in 1944, Brindisi was the capital of Italy.
This was because, during the difficult war years, it was necessary to find a safe place for the Italian government, and Rome could no longer be a safe haven because it was highly vulnerable to air attacks. Brindisi was chosen instead for its strategic port and favorable geographical position in the Mediterranean.

My autumn walk in Brindisi was a true immersion in the Italian history. I particularly appreciated its port, the beautiful waterfront, and the delicious food. I hope you enjoyed this short report, and thank you for reading.
See you next time,
Delilha

Delilha
