I haven't played this (or any Halo) game before, so I can't say for sure... But wouldn't play on impossible disadvantages is what a challenge is meant to be?
Like, "Beating Pokemon without offensive moves" challenge...

The problem is that it isn't an elective challenge I'm doing on my own. I have to get kills with garbage weapons to progress in the battle pass and earn special cosmetic items.

I think I understand... They either didn't balance it correctly, or they intentionally did the #evil ultimatum thing:
Basically. It's either complete the hard challenge or pay tons of money to skip tiers.
