In one of the most-watched films in the history of cinema, Leonardo Di Caprio shouts "I am the king of the world", that simple phrase full of meaning is filmed while the then young and talented actor is standing on the railing of the bow of the impressive Titanic, high above the waves and the immensity of the sea.
I could talk about the phrase and about all of us who at some point in our lives believe with great intensity that we are, most of the time it is just a moment where we feel so good that we believe it almost as if it were real.
But I am not going to elaborate on that although it is a nice subject that I could deal with later.
Actually, I wanted to talk about film productions, their importance, their collection, and how the perception of success has changed over time, mainly due to advertising and the need to succeed at any cost.
If we do some kind of research we can find that practically every year collection records are broken in some feature films, generally they are results obtained from the conjunction of money invested in promotion, advertising, film critics, and actors on the grid. They are all necessary resources to turn a film into a commercial success, regardless of the quality of the film.
Now, if we change the way we measure success and instead of taking the money generated we take the number of tickets sold, the story changes completely. You would be totally surprised to see the ordering and even more so the year in which each of those films was made. I warn here that the majority of information comes from information only belonging to North America, it could vary somewhat if the rest of the world were added, although I do not think that much.
In the ranking of film productions, among the first fifteen, there is only one made in the 19th century and it is also ranked 14th, it is Avatar, the rest are all from the last century and the first was made in 1939, Gone With the Wind. The film that I mention at the beginning was an absolute success and made in 1997, figure 5ta. Among the best-selling tickets and the only one in the first five to be shot in the 1990s, the other four are considerably older.
If we extend our ordering to the first 40, only 5 were made in the 19th century. This may not mean anything for the production companies because they are not guided by this but by money and there are recent productions that surpass all and several of those that appear on that list. In this other ranking, the first five are from this century.
The public obviously does not rule, they can only choose between what is offered and in that sense, they do not have too many options, although there will always be TV channels on cable or satellite that feed on the best movies of all time, which Of course they are old, where the power of money had not yet totally contaminated decisions.
That is why it is the title of this publication.
En una de las películas más vistas en la historia del cine, Leonardo Di Caprio grita “Soy el rey del mundo”, esa simple frase cargada de significados está filmada mientras el por entonces joven y talentoso actor se encuentra parado en la baranda de la proa del impresionante Titanic, muy alto sobre las olas y la inmensidad del mar.
Podría hablar sobre la frase y sobre todos los que en algún momento de nuestras vidas nos creemos con gran intensidad que lo somos, la mayoría de las veces es solo un momento donde nos sentimos tan bien que lo creemos casi como si fuera real.
Pero no voy a extenderme sobre eso aunque es un lindo tema que podría tratar más adelante.
En realidad quería hablar sobre las producciones cinematográficas, su importancia, su recaudación y como ha cambiado a lo largo del tiempo la percepción del éxito debido fundamentalmente a la publicidad y la necesidad de triunfar a cualquier costo.
Si hacemos algún tipo de investigación podremos encontrar que prácticamente todos los años se baten records de recaudación en algunos largometrajes, generalmente son resultados obtenidos a partir de la conjunción de dinero invertido en promoción, publicidad, críticos de cine y actores de la grilla. Son todos recursos necesarios para convertir una película en un éxito comercial, sin importar la calidad de la misma.
Ahora bien, si cambiamos la forma de medir el éxito y en vez de tomar el dinero generado tomamos la cantidad de tickets vendidos, la historia cambia totalmente. Les sorprendería totalmente ver el ordenamiento y más aún el año en que cada una de esas películas fueron realizadas. Advierto aquí que la información mayoritaria proviene de información solo perteneciente a América del Norte, podría variar en algo si se sumara el resto del mundo aunque no creo que demasiado.
En el ranking de las producciones cinematográficas, entre las primeras quince solo hay una realizada en el siglo XIX y además figura en el puesto 14, se trata de Avatar, las restantes son todas del siglo pasado y la primera fue realizada en el año 1939, Lo que el viento se llevó. La película que menciono al principio fue un éxito absoluto y realizada en el año 1997, figura 5ta. Entre las que más entradas vendieron y es la única entre las primeras cinco que se rodó en la década de 1990, las otras cuatro son bastante más antiguas.
Si extendemos nuestro ordenamiento hasta las primeras 40, solo 5 fueron hechas en el siglo XIX. Esto puede no significar nada para las productoras porque no se guían por esto sino por el dinero y allí si hay producciones recientes que superan a todas y varias de las que figuran en esa lista. En este otro ranking las cinco primeras son de este siglo.
El público evidentemente no manda, solo puede elegir entre lo que se le ofrece y en ese sentido no tiene demasiadas opciones, aunque siempre existirán en el cable o el satélite canales de TV que se nutren de las mejores películas de todos los tiempos, que por supuesto son antiguas, donde el poder del dinero aún no había contaminado totalmente las decisiones.
Por eso es el título de esta publicación.

Bueno, parece que ayer fue día de películas. jajaja.
Nos invitaron a pasar el día en una quinta así que no tuve tiempo de contestar. Lo hago ahora y para que veas que es un tema apasionante hoy volví a hablar de películas.

Hace unos años cuantas veces habré sentido esa frase. Lástima que casi siempre era para criticar la juventud y/o lo nuevo. Y para destacar que los valores de antaño estaban desapareciendo (y algo de razón tenían).
Hoy aparte de ser un concepto perimido sería algo fuera de lugar.
Yo también escuché esa frase muchas veces, de mis padres, otros familiares y hasta de compañeros de trabajo mayores. Creo que una frase de denota nostalgia por tiempos pasados que no volverán, respeto eso, más ahora que entiendo el concepto gracias a que mi juventud se fue pasando con los años. jajaja
