"I wish people will come visit us so that they can see our new interior," I innocently whispered as I continued cleaning the living room. This happened when I was still a teenager.
My parent had just changed all the decor in our living room and the urge to flaunt kept popping in my head, back then, I didn't have a smartphone, so I couldn't even take pictures of it, but I wanted people, a lot of people to see the decor.
Few weeks later, a family member became ill. People started trooping in and out of our house to give a care call and I hated the fact that a lot of people were coming around, maybe because it's for the wrong reason or maybe because their visit reminded me of my wishes or just maybe because the more they visited the more I felt hurt and terrible, like I was behind the whole sickness.
I took a trip down memory lane today because a friend recently called me lamenting about how he had been retrenched from work. Funny enough , we spoke a few weeks ago and he told me how he wished he had a two weeks or a month break off work, he wanted to rest, that the work was becoming tiring and he needed a moment to breathe.
"Why lament now?" I asked him, "I know I wanted a break off work, but I wasn't expecting a retrenchment." Then it occurred to me that we really need to be careful of what we wish for.
Luke Combs- Be Careful What You Wish For
Most times, we just wish to be in other people's shoe, especially those who we think are having it all together without thinking of the consequences, like when we are seeing a movie and just wishing to be like a particular celebrity, have we ever thought about the pros and cons of our deepest desires? The lost of privacy that comes with being famous, and the lack of freedom?
Like when we see an extraordinary pretty lady or handsome dude who just walk past us and we wish to have their flawless figure , we might not really know what they are battling within them to maintain their looks, or the luxuries they possess, we are only seeing the surface, some might have gone under the knife to achieve that look while others might have forsaken their favorite food to maintain their figure and the list goes on just to mention a few. The question is, are we really ready to face the consequences that comes with our desires?
Search deep within your heart, what is it you desire? If those wishes come true are you game? Do you really want to wear that shoe? Are you ready to face the consequences or would you cringe and lament?
While it's not a bad thing in itself to wish, it is important we scrutinize our motives for wishing, it's also important we do not live in the oblivion because things do not often go as planned, it could land us in an unexpected situations or places that we weren't prepared for. So while wishing, we should be planning to face it all; the good, the bad, ugly and in-between that comes with our wishes because sometimes, the outcome of what we wish for mightn't always be what we truly wanted or desire.
I felt inspired to share this story today because life is such a teacher and everyday we live, we learn, and every time we learn from our mistakes or that of others, we become a little wiser and a little stronger to navigate through the next phase in life. As we journey through this ride called life we will realize that our mere wishes can bring us both tears and laughter, it could also be a blessing or a lesson, so think deeply and choose wisely to become whoever or achieve whatsoever in life.

I think our thoughts are very powerful; this day, I'm very careful about the things I let into my mind or the things I wish for because the universe has a way of making those wishful thoughts come to pass.
Sorry about that friend losing his job, I wish him a better job in no distant time.
Yeah our mind is a very powerful tool, and we really need to be careful what we wish for. Thank you for coming around.
Very careful and sometimes we get the opposite of what we wish for
