In today's post I will give you detailed information about the potential salt industry in Bangladesh.

  • History of salt production in Bangladesh:

Salt production has been a domestic industry in the coastal region since ancient times. Around 1600 AD, a class of people in Chittagong, known as Mollangi, used to produce salt by boiling it in #seawater.

  • Types of salt cultivation
    1. The traditional method
    2. Modern method or polythene method

Polythene salt production started in 2000 and 2001. The traditional salt production was 17.25 metric tons per acre and the new polythene method produces about 21 metric tons per acre. This method produces about 35% more international standard salt than the traditional method.

Meeting the demand of the country also creates the possibility of exporting abroad. The working salt industry is a promising sector of our economy. From salt production to blue packaging, about 5 lakh people are involved in this industry and about 25 lakh people are dependent.

The industry contributes 1200 to 1500 crores to the national economy every year. Which is processed as finished goods and stands at three thousand to three thousand five hundred crore rupees. Cox's Bazar District Maheshkhali, Teknaf, Chakaria, Cox's Bazar Sadar Islampur, Baruakhali, Chouflandi and Pekua produce salt and Banshkhali in South Chittagong has land suitable for salt production.

Although the amount of land is estimated to be 94 thousand, in reality, its amount is around two lakhs. Thousands of farmers have been trying to make the country self-sufficient in salt production and salt sector for ages by working hard in the sun and rain.

Cox's Bazar district produced a record amount of salt in 2009, amounting to 18 lakh 200 metric tons. Which is the highest in the last 58 years.

The top five countries in forest production are China, USA, India, Germany, Canada and Bangladesh. Bangladesh is in the 27th position. The salt produced in the Cox's Bazar region is also exported abroad to meet the demand of the country. But sadly, the salt industry is in dire straits. Acquisition of about 1400 acres of land for various development projects and reduction in cultivable land. Farmers have become unemployed, the effects of the disaster have driven the fate of the people of the coast. Which is not found in any other area of the country.

If the government arranges the lands of the newly awakened chars adjacent to different coasts to the farmers on easy terms. Those lands can be increased under salt cultivation by making them suitable for salt cultivation. However, I hope that the salt industry of Bangladesh will return to the path of light after overcoming all obstacles. Infinite potential of the coast should be planted.
