Art, Artists, and The Never-ending Exploitation

in BDCommunity2 years ago

Artists are probably the most exploited people in developing countries like Bangladesh.

It starts from a very basic level.
"You can draw well? Okay draw me a portrait. You'll have a chance to practice your hand you know. No harm done!"

"You can write pretty cool man. Here, I have this article I have to finish by tomorrow. Perhaps you can help. What do you mean you're busy! You can post 3 times on facebook and cannot write a few lines for me?"

"You have a very nice voice. No wonder you're in the voice-art business. Would you mind narrating this piece for me on record? Yo you talk with that voice all day anyway, what's wrong with reading a couple pages for a friend's short film?" - they're awestruck.

As you can imagine, the list goes on and on with almost all sorts of arts and artists. Asking people to lend us their art and talent for free has become such a norm around these kinds of societies that if you ask them to compensate you for the work thats supposed to be done professionally, they'd be shocked like you’ve tesered them with 2000v electricity.
"Ohh you want to get paid for something I see you do anyway for the social media from me? Even though we're friends? Damn! okay sorry for asking you. I though we were better friends than this".... and the gaslighting and nagging goes on. At times, we do give up as its pointless to explain the scenario to people who already don't get the zist, other times we try to make them see it, and fail, and then give up anyway.

The exploitation starts from this personal level, but it goes so much higher than we'd imagine it to in the beginning.

Suppose you're a Banker but you draw on your own time, the bank would ask and expect you to design them a poster for the upcoming "Banking Fest" since "you're so good at it anyway" and they'd "rather have their own people do it (for free) than hire some random artist off of the outsourcing workplaces".
Your post is of a graphic designer at an organisation but you learned video making as a hobby? They'd ask you to shoot and edit you their online promo/OVC, in the weekend of-cource, as "you'd be able to personally relate to the organization's culture and showcase it to the potential audience." Well payment isn’t even something to talk about here man! "Its your organisation right! What do you mean you want payment for doing something for your own organization, your own people!"

The sheer surprise of these people surprises me every time I see their reaction to something like this. I mean this happens with most fields of works, I know. But artists have to be the worst sufferers of this. At least from what I've seen. Since to them, "its just a hobby you see?"
And honestly, I can't see how we can put an end to this for good anytime soon, when the problem is rooted so deeply, and is treated as a norm by people of all types, places and classes, both in and around these societies.

Sort:

There is nothing wrong in asking and therefore giving. What is not write is asking for free and giving for free.

We don’t do that here.

Notice, you wrote a 534 word shitpost (as we like to call it) and you potentially can get paid $12 for it. Lots of people in BD won’t get that much for a daily income. Right?

Absolutely getting your point here @azircon. But the "free" part is literally the focal point of my post here as you can understand.

And the worse part is in our society they'd guilt you; and even gaslight you to make you feel like it's your fault that you're not giving in with their "very normal" requests. And the worst part is, most of us end up complying with them as we don't want any trouble or to step down from the "good guy" image.
