Kitchen Progress! Countertop, New Sink, Knobs

'You're a knob' I say.
'No, you're a knob' he counters.

Such is our descent into DIY madness.

We went with the brown wood knobs from Temu because cheap. We're broke. Sue me. But they look nice. I think they suit the scandi retro feel of the place. I'll try to make up for it with other more ethical choices when the sale goes through, alright? Balance in all things. Still waiting for rest to arrive.

Speaking of countering, we have progressed on the countertop. We got the wood cheap, and cheap it was. It's no where near as nice as the thick recycled oregon we got, but for $500, it'll do for now. I think it's kinda rustic and they've turned out better than I thought. A good sand, and some Fiddes Hard Wax Oil, and they're okay. I mean there's bits we had to fill and they're not perfect but I'm happy.

The sink was hard to find, as we needed the draining board and for it to fit an Ikea 80 cm wide cabinet and to have the plumbing at the back because of the drawer with the rubbish bins in (which I bloody love). We finally found a Franke one - Jamie had to jigsaw out a hole which was not at all easy.

We got some vertical join panelling to put under the bench top looking toward kitchen from the lounge. I didn't want the brown beige facing the lounge area so the panelling was perfect. It came primed so we will paint it properly when we do the skirting boards.

I'm super happy with what we've come up with. I'm hoping Ikea will finally get in the Sinarp wooden fronts for the wall cabinets - a lovely dark wood veneer that'll match nicely with the handles. Meanwhile Jamie has to hold up the cabinet panels every now and then sp I can see what it looks like :p

I can't believe it's all coming together.

Any suggestion for the splashback??

Today the ugly pacing is getting removed - we are getting concrete pavers to save Jamie's poor body. We are also at the point we would like to wrap the beam and have cut some wood to prepare. More on this later.

It's the beam that runs up length of house and we had to reinforce it when they took out a small wall. We hated the coving on the beam so when that came off there was a gap between the beam and ceiling. So we are going to 'wrap' it in pine, creating a mock beam. We couldn't find any five metre lengths of any other wood but I think pine is underrated.

Onwards!

With Love,

In the old kitchen, I had a preformed countertop and it had a 4" backsplash. I just painted with gloss paint above it for cleaning. In the new kitchen, I spent the money on nice tiles. Outside of looking for the tiles, I never put much mind into that area at any time.

That's actually a genius idea!!!!! Thankyou!!!!
