I like to recycle, so I buy most of my packaged foods in glass jars. When I consume the food contained in them, I keep the glass jars for future use and store them in a box to keep them handy.
One of the goals of recycling is to give some things a second chance to be used, but we must be creative. There is no point in crafting or building something if it doesn't have a utilitarian purpose. Let's see how a few simple glass jars can be a nice gift.
At my son's school, they assigned an activity where they had to work with the gastronomy of various countries that would generate meaningful learning. So this activity went beyond just talking about food.
The day to recycle the glass jars stored at home had arrived.
As Mother's Day is approaching, we decided to prepare dips and pack them in glass jars. On other occasions I have already made gifts to my friends by packing jams, tomato sauces or dried spices in glass jars. This way, I give a second use to these jars and maybe my friends too. Today I'm sharing how we turned a school activity into an opportunity to recycle and make a gift for the mothers of my son's classmates.
Glass jars with lids
Scissors
Fabric
Ribbons or thin rope
Cardboard
The first thing to do is wash the jars and lids well and then sterilize them. Place the jars and lids in a pot and cover them with water. Place the pot over medium heat and when the water comes to a boil, start boiling for 10 minutes and then turn it off. Carefully place each jar upside down on a clean kitchen cloth to remove excess water.
When the glass jars are still warm, we fill them with the previously prepared dips. We prepared eggplant cream, paprika cream, and a yogurt-based sauce.
If you have a sheet of cardboard letter size, you can make some labels. You can design them yourself in simple programs such as PowerPoint. Look for a drawing allusive to the reason for your celebration and place a message.
The detail of the printed labels gives a personal and delicate touch, enhancing the decoration of your glass jars. You can let your imagination run wild. It's just a matter of printing and cutting them.
Once we cut each tag, you can make a hole in one of its ends to pass the gold ribbon or a thin rope. This is an important step as it will help us to attach the fabric squares to the lids.
At home, we always have pieces of fabric left over from crafts. They are small pieces, but they are ideal for this occasion. Cut the fabric into squares of 15 cm x 15 cm. Place them on the lids of the jars and with the thin ribbon or string adjust well to the height of the neck of the jar. Tie carefully, making sure that the label is visible.
No matter you prepare to fill glass jars. The detail of recycling and decorating them is a nice gesture to make a gift without investing a lot of money. I am sure that when they taste the dips, jams or sauces, your friends will be fascinated. I hope you like this idea and can put it into practice.
Happy Mother's Day!
