Contest Christmas - Earrings with the Star of Bethlehem carved in wood [ENG-ESP]

Hello dear friends, I hope you are all doing well. I'm back again with the Jewelry community to share my first Christmas-themed post. I want to participate in the contest that opened this week where we can share Christmas-themed accessories. I've chosen to make some earrings, obviously for my little daughter, featuring the Star of Bethlehem as the main motif. The biblical story tells of wise men who came from the East, guided by a star that helped them find the place where Jesus, the savior of the world, was to be born. Day and night they were guided along the long journey, even through the desert. In the end, it's implied that the star was made up of angels. When they arrived at the birthplace, it was revealed that the city was Bethlehem, and that's why the star is known by that name. It has always been represented as a bright star with 8 points where 4 are longer and 4 are shorter. Here I briefly show you how I made this pair of small stars especially to decorate some earrings. Hola queridos amigos, espero que todos se encuentren muy bien, de nuevo me presento ante la comunidad de Jewelry para compartir mi primera publicación con referencia a la navidad, y es que quiero participar en el concurso que se abrió esta semana donde podemos compartir accesorios cuyo tema sea la navidad. Yo he elegido hacer unos zarcillos, obviamente para mi pequeña hija, donde el motivo principal es la estrella de Belén. Cuenta la historia bíblica, que unos sabios venían desde el Oriente, guiados por una estrella que les ayudó a encontrar el lugar donde iba a nacer Jesús, el salvador del mundo. Día y noche fueron guiados a través del largo camino, incluso por el desierto, al final se da a entender que la estrella estaba compuesta por ángeles. Cuando llegaron al lugar de nacimiento se dio a conocer que la ciudad era Belén, así que esta estrella se le conoce con ese nombre. Siempre se ha representado como un lucero brillante de 8 puntas donde 4 son más largas y 4 son más cortas, yo aquí les muestro de manera breve como hice este par de estrellas de un tamaño pequeño especialmente para adornar unos zarcillos, les invitó a acompañarme en el proceso.

PROCESS

The first thing I did was draw a template of the star. I made it with eight points, as I described earlier, and the star has a wingspan of 2.5 centimeters. After drawing it, I added the earring to see if the size was right, and fortunately it was; the size I made was perfect.

Lo que hice en primer lugar fue dibujar una plantilla de la estrella. La hice de 8 puntas como la había descrito anteriormente, la estrella alcanza una envergadura de 2,5 centímetros de largo. Luego de dibujarla le puse el arete para ver si el tamaño era el adecuado, y afortunadamente así fue, el tamaño que hice fue el indicado.

Next, I cut pieces of wood of the same size, 3 centimeters on each side and 5 millimeters thick. After cleaning the surface on one side, I cut out the star template and placed it on the wood. Then, using a pencil, I began to draw the star stroke by stroke until it was complete, and as you can see, the size fits the wood very well.

Seguidamente corté trozos de madera de la misma medida, 3 centímetros por cada uno de sus lados y de 5 milímetros de grosor. Después de limpíar la superficie por una de sus caras corté la plantilla de la estrella y la puse encima de la amdera, así con un lápiz comence´a dibujar la estrella trazo a trazo hasta completarla, y como pueden ver el tamaño alcanza muy bien en la madera.

Using a large-bladed knife, I begin cutting the edges of the wood. I do the carving in two parts. First, I remove as much wood as possible, getting close to the ends but not so far as to shape them. I simply remove the excess wood to get a better view of how to later carve the ends.

Con una navaja de hoja grande comienzo a cortar los bordes de la madera, el tallado lo hago en dos partes, en primer lugar quitando la mayor cantidad de madera hasta acercarme a las puntas pero sin avanzar tanto como para darle forma. Solamente es retirar la madera sobrante para tener una mejor perspectiva de como luego ir tallando las puntas de la madera.

Then I make the second cut, which is to make a carving closer to the lines. I do this to mark the path I will follow in the next step when using the carving gouges, which have the smallest blade but are the best for small and precise cuts.

Luego hago el segundo corte, que se trata de hacer un tallado más cerca de los trazos, esto lo hago para marcar el camino que seguiré luego en el siguiente paso al utilizar las gubias de tallar, que tienen la hoja más pequeña pero son las mejores para los cortes pequeños y precisos.

Now it's time to work on the small details, specifically making the points. Since it's a small piece, it's not easy, as any stray cut will ruin the wood, which isn't dense enough to withstand a bad cut. Just like cutting a cake, I cut each piece until each point appears.

ahora toca el turno d etrabajar con los detalles pequeños y es hacer las puntas, al ser una pieza pequeña no es algo fácil, ya que cualquier corte desviado y se destruye la madera ya que no tiene mucha densidad para aguantar un mal corte. Así como si se tratara de un pastel, voy cortando cada pedazo hasta que cada una de las puntas vaya apareciendo.

After carving each of the points of the star, the shape is now visible; all that remains is to sand it and clean it with sandpaper until it is completely polished.

Luego d eterminar de tallar cada una de las puntas de la estrella la forma ha quedado visible, solamente falta lijarla y limpiarla con una lija hasta pulirla por completo.

I made the second piece following the same process as before: cutting most of the wood, then refining the lines, and finally shaping each of the points. Then I sanded and polished the entire piece before applying a glossy varnish.

La segunda pieza la hice siguiendo todo el proceso anterior, cortando la mayor parte de madera, luego acercandome a los trazos y por último dandole forma a cada una de las puntas. Luego también lijé y pulí toda la pieza para luego ponerle barniz brillante.

Finally, I put two metal rings on one end so I could later attach the earrings and thus have the earrings, then a simple coat of varnish so that the wood has a better finish.

Por último puse dos aros de metal en uno de los extremos para poder colocar luego los aretes y asi tener los zarcillos, luego un simple baño de barniz para que la madera tenga un mejor acabado.

These beautiful Star of Bethlehem earrings are now finished! My daughter hasn't seen them yet, so it will be a surprise for her when she finally gets to see them this weekend. I'll take this opportunity to tell her about the meaning of this symbol and Christmas in general. We should use this time of year to share and be better people, not just because it's Christmas, but because it teaches us that the One who had everything gave it all up to come and save us. We shouldn't just be good people during one time of year, but every day. We are our own competition, and each day that passes is a new opportunity to improve. Así ha quedado finalizado estos hermosos zarcillos de la Estrella de Belén, mi hija aún no los ha visto, así que será una sopresa para ella cuando pueda verla este fin de semana. Aprovecharé para contarle el significado de este símbolo, y de la navidad en general, debemos aprovechar estas fechas para compartir y ser mejores personas, y no solo porque es navidad, sino porque nos enseña que aquél que lo tenía todo, lo dejó por venir a salvarnos. No debemos simplemente ser buenas personas en una época del año sino todos los días, nosotros somos nuestra propia competencia y cada día que pasa es una nueva oportunidad para mejorar.
