Warhammer 40k - Battle Report 30 - 750pts Space Wolves vs Aeldari

in Tabletop / DND4 days ago

Hello everyone! Zak Ludick from Cape Town, South Africa here and this is Warhammer 40,000!

I have not done a Warhammer Battle Report in a good long while (About 3 months) and it is time for me to catch it up... also it is pretty good to break up my Warhammer Library Review posts a bit with other kinds of content!

So Battle Number 30 of 10th edition was during the Slow Grow event and I played a game against Alon, a player that had started an Aeldari army. I was playing my Vanguard which was not quite a horde yet since this was only 750pts.

Let's get right into it!

Pretty simple Deployment. Alon had selected the Avatar of Khaine and a Solitaire as part of his lineup. The Avatar is more of a centrepiece unit and is extremely powerful.

This means that he did not have much else in his army.

  • 5 Dark Reapers
  • 2x5 Striking Scorpions
  • 5x Dire Avengers

I had the following

  • Wolf Guard Battle Leader(Lieutenant)
  • Rune Priest
  • 3x 10 Blood Claws
  • 5x Long Fangs with 4x Lascannons

When facing as Alon called it: A Meme list. Which contains two very powerful units, I should probably kite the Avatar and destroy the rest of his army.

The Long Fangs can deal D6+1 damage a turn to the Avatar, though he halves incoming damage so more like 1-4 Damage tops.

However, the Solitaire can get to my Long Fangs in one turn and that is no good. I could screen the Long Fangs and then wait for him to come to me while taking fire from Dark Reapers.

Not ideal.

The Battle Leader has the ability to give the unit Lethal Hits and that can also mean a lot of wounds on the Avatar with Oath of moment.

I also have a Rune Priest with a unit of 10 which gives that unit 4+ invul saves.

I decided to do a stress test, win or lose to see what it takes to kill an Avatar.

This set up was good for me as it prevented a first turn charge from the Solitaire on the Long Fangs.

The Solitaire is the one with the flowing cloak right in front.

This little ninja clown is capable of a Blitz move once per have where he add additional movement, he can also Advance AND charge in that turn! Massive speed!

This flank looked a bit weak, but Dire Avengers get a lot of shots and Striking Scorpions can also wreck units.

I went gun ho and managed to complete a 1st turn charge against the Avatar with both units!

Unfortunately the dice were not on my side and I did not do too much damage.

The Long Fangs also took a crack at him and did not do much either... 4+ Invulnerable saves blocked all damage from coming through!

On the other side also managing a 1st turn charge, a Blood Claw with a Bolt Pistol managed to get past the Solitaire's 3+ Invul save to put 1 wound on the Solitaire.

They then completed a charge against the Striking Scorpions and wrecked havoc! All the Scorpions were wiped out and the Blood Claws consolidated into the Solitaire and the Dark Reapers!

This had been a surprising turn for my opponent!

On my Opponent's turn the Striking Scorpions that were on his left flank moved to support the Avatar and the Dire Avengers moved to support as well.

Dark Reapers moved away from the Blood Claws.

When I had consolidated into the Solitaire, it allowed him to attack the Blood Claws. In hindsight a Rune Priest would have been good here!

After a charge from the Scorpions the Battle Leader's unit were wiped out but the Battle Leader survived.

Still the Avatar survived.

Long Fangs shot at the Dark Reapers and killed a bunch of them.

I got really bust rolling dice after that, the Avatar and Scorpions managed to kill the Blood Claws and ran across the board to charge into the Long Fangs.

The Solitaire activated his Blitz and easily made the charge.

And that was the end of the battle for me! I was wiped out!

Stress test of the Avatar completed!

Thank you Alon for the Match!

Ooooof. That was nasty!

It looks like the play arena was a lot more narrow and short than a usual 2000 point table - which obviously makes sense, but I'm curious if you might have had more lucky if the Long Fangs had more turns to take down the big guy before he got into melee?

They would also last longer if I didn't run to him! Lol

Layer my defence.
