Eating Myself Healthy: How I Take Care of My Health (A Unity Toward Freedom Challenge Response]

It's been a long time since I've written about health on HIVE, partly because I've written a lot about it in with my involvement of a large community here focussed on alternative and natural healing. I learnt so much from people through that community. Yet still my own health journey comes down to some core things that have always been part of my life, as I was raised in a household that focussed on being healthy. Not only that, I lived in an environment that was quite health conscious - in a small town on a beautiful stretch of coastline. Everyone I knew ate healthily so it wasn't very difficult. Foraging, herbs, plants - all that was just how we grew up. No Maccas in my world...

These days, I'm much the same - I still eat a principally vegetarian diet, with not a lot of cheese - mainly paneer, halloumi and sprinklings of parmesan on pasta although most times I'll choose the vegan option. I don't have a problem with eating cheese, I'm just conscious of the industry that produces it which has a huge impact on the planet and isn't always ethical or kind. But that's a whole other debate. For me, it's about getting enough protein, and having a varied diet.

The major snackfood in our house is dates and almonds. That's what it was when I was a kid, except Mum bought figs and apricots as well, and other kinds of nuts, which Jamie can't eat (even the figs makes him sick). I do make an awesome seed loaf which puts pretty much all the goodness into one amazing loaf, including psyllium, which is good for the gut, oats for the nervous system, and lots of nuts and seeds. It's really filling and we eat a lot of it, and it always makes us feel better than eating a ton of bread.

I grew up with Mum saying things like: 'you shouldn't have the same breakfast two days in a row' and 'did you know capsicum has a lot of vitamin c in it' and 'you should have an orange with your dinner to help absorb the iron'. Of course when you're growing up that's kinda annoying but then it did help me understand health through food, and whenever I'm feeling poorly it's food I look to for the answer. What should I be eating to make myself feel better? Most often it's dal soup rich with turmeric, ginger and chilli, and some coconut yoghurt on top! Top tip: lemons with everything - they are a flavour enhancer!

Of course many of you will also know that I'm pretty fanatical about herbs. Sure, I can make a salve or a tea, but I love just adding tons of them to my diet in all kinds of ways, whether I'm nibbling on fresh coriander seeds in the garden or a few leaves of fennel or adding fresh horseradish leaves or basil to a garden salad. There's sooo many nutrients in plants that the more you can get in the diet the better.

Of course, nothing is certain. Dad's diet was immaculate and he exercised all the time with surfing and yoga and so on and he still got sick (likely due to the chemicals in Vietnam) and then I am a highly anxious person so sometimes I think I'm vibrating myself to an early grave. But as we said to Dad, of course being healthy is worth it because you live a good life on the way to the grave.

One of his philosophies was 'you just gotta keep moving'. I'm not fanatical about exercise by any means, except for surfing, but I do try to walk everyday, do my core exercises, some yoga and meditation. Move it or lose it, so they say, and I'm feeling that more and more the older I get.

I never have got my head around fad diets like keto and always have my Mum's voice echoing round my head that the only good diet is a healthy diet. That means different things for the diversity of bodies and genetics we all have but I know what it works for me. I go into meltdown if I don't eat a lot of veggies daily whereas Jamie, raised on a British diet, gets upset if he doesn't have his vegemite toast daily and baked beans at least once a week. He always said he'd be loads less healthier if he didn't have me. Grated beetroot, for example, was a foreign concept. And having something like the below on pasta was just wild. But he loves it. This one has kale, lacto fermented lemons, roast sunflower seeds, wild garlic, fennel, spinach and broccoli. Eat your greens!

image.png

I'm really blessed with being able to cook so it always takes me by surpise when people can't, or don't know how to supplement their diet naturally. I find myself pushing things like fire cider onto people. It's so darn easy and so good for the immune system. Some people might know about it but they'll be getting it from the shop which just blows my mind. Anything you need to figure out how to make you can find out on the internet.

image.png

One of those things is salves or balms. Lavender and calendula are a firm favourite. Currently I'm drying plantain to make a healing balm as many of you know my experiences with that wonder plant!

image.png

And then of course, I have a slight obsession with growing my own mushrooms.. they add protein, fibre and other goodness to the diet, as well as some pretty amazing healing abilities if you're talking turkeytail, reishi and so on.

here is his lovely Unity Toward Freedom community. Oh, and if you're interested in herbs as party of a healthy diet, there's a Herbal Hive challenge on at the moment so don't forget to check that out!All in all I think @anttn and I line up pretty well with our attitudes to health. You can join in his challenge

This is wonderful and sad at the same time. You can share your knowledge with the world but you don't have the personal connection between people and between generations.

My diet is lots of fruit and lots of greens but I'm learning more and more about herbs and other supplements...from posts like yours 🙂

Yes you are right. A real disconnect.

OK. You got the Vegan post covered.

How so??? Oh because of the meals I show?

Oh sorry. There wasn't enough context in that comment. I had just finished reading this article here: https://peakd.com/hive-164166/@blanchy/so-you-are-a-boring-author-on-hive-and-your-posts-are-getting-no-comments-what-to-do-next-a-guide

The article talks about how to attract whales through Vegan posts. Then I saw your post and laughed because you are not trying to attract whales. Besides whales eat mostly krill and that is not exactly vegan.

Here is a vegetable !PIZZA

What!! That's a bit crazy.... Maybe I should do that 😂😂

Read it. Kinda funny. But a bit mean to the good vegans here doing great content....

More veggie !PIZZA and a little !LUV

Keto, I flipped out when that trend appeared. Even tho I had no troubles consuming everything, honestly got sick watching all those fatty recipes, mostly was used by gym people.

Cooking and meal prep is a challenge especially in big cities, lack of fresh veggies, lack of time and the most important lack of creativity, but still someone managed to figure out "healthy plastic packed meals" - those are selling good.

I could try out that dry fruit cake, looks delicious....

Oh I'll dig up the recipe for you!!!

Keto... 🤢🤢🤢🤢 Honestly makes me ill. Why???? 🤢🤢🤢

I imagine the french would take well to it though - all that butter and meat ?

Plastic wrapped healthy meals... Crazy huh? What a world we live in. Buuuuut you know, I was at the supermarket yesterday and saw loose cherry tomatoes you could scoop into a paper bag....felt like a little progress? I guess it's hard for busy city folk. But if the culture changed, everything else would follow...

Oh I'll dig up the recipe for you!!!

That would be great! Looks like a great fasting treat.

I'm not saying there is no veggie offer at supermarkets, but most often quality is desperate especially during winter times.

Progress is mostly location based, we can't figure up recycling system yet.

As much as I love mushrooms, I’ve never tried growing my own! I bought some seeds back in Poland and hoping to try next season. Although seeing how bombarded I am with posts of people growing their own, I might try buying a set and try much earlier 😁

I’d love to try that seed loaf of yours. It looks delicious 🤤💙

One day!!! You have the intention. What do you mean, seeds? How does that work?

I’ll show you when I’m back home. They’re like a starters. I need to find a log and drill holes in it and put them inside to grow 😁💙

Totally agree when it comes to diets, never been my thing. You have shared so many amazing health related things here on Hive.

It’s important for me as well to eat healthy, it’s just often hard for me to enjoy food though. I struggle a lot with nausea. But I still believe that I’ll get to the bottom of this at some point.

I'm glad you still feel hopeful. Are you seeing anyone about it currently? I feel for you.

I'm not seeing anyone about it currently. Not quite sure where to look next, to be honest. But I'm positive something will present itself. I do believe though that I already have all the answers inside, it's just a matter of accessing them 🙂

Yes, you are your own guru!!!

Whaoo... Firstly, let me commend you on your writing skills. It was written so perfectly I didn't skip any line. Made me feel energized about my write up and some other things I should have added which I didn't. It was great to learn from your point of view.

Also, if one associate the food they eat to their health, it will help them pick the right type of food to eat and what and what should go with each other when it comes to food.

Most time people just eat what they see without care about their diet or what the food cause to their body. Like an hypertensive patient who eat salty things. Bad for the health. It was nice reading this.. !luv

@fashtioluwa, sorry! You need more $LUV to use this command.

The minimum requirement is 10.0 LUV in your liquid wallet.

More LUV is available from Hive-Engine or Tribaldex

It looks like Hobbit food...I'll still probably eat it.

Hobbit food is good food! Wholesome.

This is true, but those tricksy Hobbitses don't like to share...and they tried to take away the precious.

I'll eat their food though.

What a wonderful article ! Thank you so much for sharing it here, it's so heartwarming :) After I just read your article, I completely agree with your conclusion, our health and life patterns to some extent are similar in many ways, except you are a Jedi and I am... still a padawan haha ^^ , although I am on the road and confident in the idea of continuing to learn without diminishing the amount of things I don't know and may never know.

The nutritional reflections of mothers, we should make a whole compilation ! Your mother's seems to be particularly technical, mine was not at that level even if she defended herself very well :) She makes a bread with seeds and quinoa which is very similar to yours.

I learned so much from reading your article that I thought of printing it out and putting it in one of my cookbooks. (Which I'll probably do ;) Now I have to digest a bit ^^ and go and research fire cider, I remember we talked about it, but I really have to get on with it!

Thank you a thousand times over ! I wish you happy end of year moments with your family 💚

PS: I loved the part about Jamie's eating habits !

Your food always looks so good and you certainly know about health. I love that over the years we have learnt so much from others, because of the wonderful communities we wee a part of and the ones you created. All that wonderful knowledge forever on here. Big up to you wonderful being. Queen of the mushrooms xxxxxx

Aw, thankyou..doesn't Nat Med feel like eons ago?

Fire cider is an intriguing combination of words... I'll have to search that up
