Colaborando con @fermionico en esto de animar a los amigos del feed de @fulldeportes a participar de la iniciativa sobre las hazañas deportivas de 2025 y, por supuesto, también fuera de competencia, publico esta nota sobre un deporte que no es popular en la comunidad pero a mí me gusta mucho, no solamente verlo sino también practicarlo.
Estoy hablando del golf y una hazaña que seguramente pasó desapercibida para la gran mayoría de los amigos que no siguen este bello deporte, se trata del Grand Slam conseguido por el norirlandés Rory McIlroy al ganar el Masters de Augusta en abril de este año que está por culminar.
Deseo en esta nota esclarecer el alcance de tal logro y para ello conviene explicar en primer lugar qué significan estas 2 palabras que son utilizadas en varios otros deportes. Se entiende por Grand Slam al pequeño grupo de los torneos más importantes, de mayor relevancia y trascendencia en un deporte determinado, generalmente son 4 torneos y las actividades deportivas en que más se destaca esta definición son el tenis y el golf.
En el tenis el Grand Slam está compuesto por el Abierto de Australia (Melbourne), Francia (Roland Garros), Inglaterra (Wimbledon) y Estados Unidos (Nueva York). En el golf la distribución geográfica no es tan internacional, pero también hay 4 torneos mayores que son: el Masters de Augusta (USA), el campeonato de la PGA (USA), el abierto de los Estados Unidos (USA) y el abierto británico (rota entre los países que conforman las islas británicas).
Si bien no hay otros deportes donde se replique con exactitud esta figura, sí hay otros donde esas dos palabras se utilizan para definir un logro de gran trascendencia;, en el béisbol por ejemplo, cuando un jugador batea un homerun con bases llenas, en el rugby de las 6 naciones cuando un combinado nacional logra vencer a los 5 rivales tradicionales, en la Fórmula 1 cuando un piloto logra la pole position, el récord de vuelta, lidera todas las vueltas y gana la carrera. Por último, en la pesca con mosca, especialidad que practico desde hace mucho tiempo, se denomina Grand Slam a la captura (y suelta) de un bonefish, un tarpón y un permit, especies muy difíciles de pescar en esa modalidad.
Una vez explicado esto, pasemos al logro en sí.
La historia del golf como deporte de competencia tiene muchísimos años aunque no tantos desde la homologación de los 4 torneos considerados mayores. En este contexto acotado solo 5 jugadores habían conseguido triunfar en esos 4 torneos considerados los más importantes de este deporte; ellos son: Gene Sarazen (USA) en 1935, Ben Hogan (USA) en 1953, Gary Player (Sudáfrica) en 1965, Jack Nicklaus (USA) en 1966, Tiger Woods (USA) en 2000.
En abril de este año que termina, Rory McIlroy consigue su propio Grand Slam al vencer en el Masters de Augusta y convertirse en el sexto jugador en lograrlo en toda la historia del golf, el primero de origen europeo.
Una enorme hazaña deportiva, espero que coincidan conmigo.

Collaborating with @fermionico to encourage the followers of @fulldeportes to participate in the initiative about sporting achievements of 2025, and of course, also outside of competition, I'm publishing this post about a sport that isn't popular in the community but that I really enjoy, not only watching it but also playing it.
I'm talking about golf and an achievement that surely went unnoticed by the vast majority of friends who don't follow this beautiful sport: the Grand Slam achieved by Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy when he won the Masters Tournament in Augusta in April of this year, which is about to end.
In this post, I want to clarify the scope of this achievement, and to do so, it's helpful to first explain what these two words, which are used in several other sports, mean. A Grand Slam refers to the small group of the most important, relevant, and significant tournaments in a given sport; generally, there are four tournaments, and the sports in which this definition is most prominent are tennis and golf.
In tennis, the Grand Slam consists of the Australian Open (Melbourne), the French Open (Roland Garros), the Wimbledon English Open (Wimbledon), and the US Open (New York). In golf, the geographical distribution is not as international, but there are also four major tournaments: the Masters Tournament (USA), the PGA Championship (USA), the US Open (USA), and the British Open (which rotates among the countries of the British Commonwealth).
While there are no other sports where this concept is exactly replicated, there are others where these two words are used to define a highly significant achievement; in baseball, for example, when a player hits a grand slam home run; in Six Nations rugby, when a national team manages to defeat all five traditional rivals; and in Formula 1, when a driver achieves pole position, sets the fastest lap, leads every lap, and wins the race. Finally, in fly fishing, a specialty I've practiced for a long time, the term "Grand Slam" refers to catching (and releasing) a bonefish, a tarpon, and a permit—species that are very difficult to catch using this method.
Having explained this, let's move on to the achievement itself.
The history of golf as a competitive sport spans many years, although not as long since the official recognition of the four major tournaments. Within this limited context, only five players had managed to win these four tournaments, considered the most important in the sport. They are: Gene Sarazen (USA) in 1935, Ben Hogan (USA) in 1953, Gary Player (South Africa) in 1965, Jack Nicklaus (USA) in 1966, and Tiger Woods (USA) in 2000.
In April of this past year, Rory McIlroy achieved his own Grand Slam by winning the Masters Tournament at Augusta, becoming the sixth player in golf history to do so, and the first of European origin.
A tremendous sporting feat; I hope you agree.

Sin duda, el golf es un deporte extraordinario.
Solo hay que intentar el empuñar un palo y hacer un swing para poder poner en perspectiva lo dificultoso que es.
Y si a eso le agregas ganar los cuatro grandes, sin duda es una hazaña increíble.
Y el que solo se haya logrado 6 veces, pues confirma lo exclusivo de ese club de golfistas.
