Next Sunday will be the Sinulog festival here in Cebu and everyone is already very excited about it. Foreigners and other people from different parts of the Philippines are expected to visit our City to join the festivities.
Sinulog is the yearly celebration for Sto Nino de Cebu, normally celebrated on the third Sunday of January. But days prior to the grand celebration, as a Cebuano, I can feel the beat of Sinulog. Thousands of people are in the downtown area of Cebu attending the Novena mass. Some barangays are also decorating their town with the Sto Nino Statue to match the Sinulog festivities.
Historically, this religious festival occured during the time When Spaniards used to colonized the Philippines for 333 years. They've introduced Christianity, including the Black Nazarene, Snr Sto Nino. But as we evolved, it became a great celebration not just for Christians but for all Cebuanos. Mayors celebrate this occassion through sponsoring street parties, dance contest, and free concerts.
But despite all the fun, I must confess that I've never gone to any of these street parties and free concerts. Our Sinulog tradition is quite simple- we strive to complete, sometimes barely, the 9 days Novena mass at Basilica Minor del Sto Nino. It's been said that Sto Nino will grant all your prayer petition when you've completed the 9 days Novena. This is the essence of the celebration that not all people knew.
Another downside of street parties is the massive and uncontrollable crowd. Signal is also off during this time to avoid any threats that involve safety and security. Although, there are police patrols in every corner during the festivities.
We can still celebrate the festival away from the crowd anyway. I can't wait for Sinulog this coming Sunday!

I used to live in Cebu when I was still working as a call center agent but now that I entered the field of teaching, I relocated to the province, but I still go to Cebu City especially during Sinulog. I look forward to attending the novena masses. There is not one prayer that Sto.Niño has not granted for me, He is truly miraculous. PIT SEÑOR!!!
