Steely Dan "My Old School" Josephs BassCam Nov 2 2025

Welcome to Josephs BassCam footage from November 2, 2025! Another performance with the Jazz Derelicts.

Song: “My Old School” The bass part on my sheet music good. It’s super close to the original. I try to play it as written until we get to climactic parts of the song. Then, I play a bombastic version of the written bass part. It’s forgiving. No complaint from anyone so far. Just stay out of the singer’s way, count well, and musically emphasis the breakdown section or ends of solos.

Same Gear:

GoPro: Hero 11 Black Mini on a GoPro sticker mount. I was incorrect in the previous posts. The settings are at 10:80, wide, 24fps. This 4 string bass has a GoPro style sticker mount that I added many years ago. This was for a Hero 3. It still works for modern GoPro cameras. It’s not the suction cup like I use for driving footage and the 5 string bass. This mount had a better angel with the older cameras. The newer camera just won’t flex as much. I need another goose neck or an additional elbow. Grr…

Bass: Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe 4 String… also known as “Bread and Butter.” when I was a full-time musician I used this bass and I modified it for longevity. Three hour performances on consecutive days can wear down your fingertips and muscle strength. I modified this bass to have the lightest flatwound strings I could find and I payed a master to balance it and set up the strings. This guy is top tier and did some interesting things to balance my Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe. He was actually a technician at the factory in Orange County long long ago.

Beer: Probably the same one. I’m trying to post these videos in oder of performance. (West Coast Pilsner• 5.2% ABV hopped w/ Krush, Nelson, Simcoe, & Krush Quantum before helping to lead a band of musicians.) #beer
