Beer Tasting: Black Sheep Velo & Weihenstephaner 1516 Kellerbier

Hello, beer tasters! 🍻 😎 🍻

It was a beautiful sunny day outside. Well, that didn't help much, I was preparing firewood for my mother for the next season. And, you probably won't believe me, I drank nothing but water all day until dark. Since it's #beersaturday, I told myself to wait, then the beer will be better! :)

Two beers, one an English blonde ale, the other a German kellerbier, are waiting for me. Since I've been starving for beers all day, I'm sure there won't be a drop left. :)

First, the one with less alcohol.

Black Sheep Velo Citrus Pale Ale

Brewed by Black Sheep Brewery, Masham, England.
Bottle, 0.5 l, alcohol 4.2% ABV. It's Blonde Ale style, which means a well-hopped and bitter with less malt and usually with only British ingredients.

What master brewers say:

It's a ‘free wheeling’ fresh pale ale brewed with cascade hops and an ever-so-subtle hint of orange and coriander. Developed at our very own microbrewery before being promoted to our main plant due to unprecedented demand.
btw: Velo in French means bicycle – but you knew that!

Ok, let's taste this combination of orange and coriander. Must say, in advance, that I don't like coriander in food very much, but in beer?
We'll see ...

The beer is golden in color, the head is average. It has no smell. The first sip goes down the throat smoothly and immediately I taste a distinct hop bitterness, citrus in the background, and hints of spice, yes, coriander is it but it doesn't dominate. A complete absence of malt, no sweetness.
In the aftertaste, the fruity aromas and spices disappear, but the hop bitterness lingers for quite some time.

I find it very refreshing. Very well balanced, maybe a shade more orange, coriander is not predominant which is very good for me.
In the summer heat, it would be ideal. It's a little harder to get here but I would like to have a bottle in the fridge.

Weihenstephaner 1516 Kellerbier

Brewed by Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan, Freising, Germany. Being owned by the Free State of Bavaria, founded in 1040, is the oldest continuously operating brewery in the world.
Bottle, 0.5 l, alcohol 5.6%, ABV, 25 IBU. The Kellerbier is a young, unfiltered, unpasteurized version of the traditional German beer style.

What master brewers say:

1516 Kellerbier was first brewed to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot (purity law for beer). It has rapidly become an insider tip among beer enthusiasts and is often served with grilled foods, roasts, and cheeses. The first sip of this amber-orange-colored Kellerbier reveals a touch of caramel. Its fresh and fruity aroma is owed to the chosen hops and accompanied by a pleasant bitterness. In combination with a well-balanced malt body this wonderfully mild and smooth beer was created to please both, your tongue and mind. The hops chosen are the rare sort “Hallertauer Record” for bittering and "Hallertauer Perle" as well as “Hallertauer Mittelfrüh” for aroma.

Ugh, the oldest brewery, purity law for beer, traditional recipe, this is really worth tasting.

The beer is golden in color, the foam is firm and creamy but not much. It doesn't have a smell. The first sip is quite runny, first, there is bitterness but not so pronounced, then the sweetness of malt and a discreet taste of caramel. In the aftertaste, the malt remains, there is almost no bitterness.

Very good, in fact, excellent beer!
I don't think I've tasted such a good German beer for a long time, at least not in the last few years. Very harmonized, few ingredients, minimalism, classic beer hops and malts, no special fruity additions, but all very harmonious.
Although hard to get it should end up in my fridge.

To finish, both beers were above the average of what I've tried (and written about) at least this year.
Maybe I was too thirsty, chopped wood all day without beer and that alone made them more delicious?

You really should drink styrian beer, at least we are not far away and one geographical region ;-)

Anyway, as I can see your work with firewood like me :) Styrian? I taste some I think...

Gösser, Puntigamer, Murauer ... are the most known styrian beers I think.
Oh yes I think having the possibility to heat a house with wood is very calming in these times :-)
