Podřipský Family Microbrewery, Ctiněves

In my yesterday post, I took you on a journey from Roudnice and Labem to the summit of Říp Hill, tracing the footsteps of the legendary Forefather Czech. While we could have enjoyed some crafted beer in the wooden cottage next to the 11th-century rotunda, we stumbled upon an even better place to refresh ourselves: a family microbrewery located in the nearby village of Ctiněves. Despite its small population of only 379 residents, the village seems the same to many others across central Bohemia. Even the microbrewery alone does not make it stand out; there are hundreds throughout the Czech Republic. Nevertheless, let us now descend from Říp Hill and venture into the promised land of milk, honey, and obviously beer.

Včera jsem vás vzal na cestu po stopách Praotce Čecha z Roudnice nad Labem na vrchol Řípu. A i když jsme si mohli dát slušné řemeslné pivo v chatě vedle rotundy, měli jsme v itineráři ještě zajímavější místo. Rodinný minipivovar ve vesnici Ctiněves hned pod Řípem. Ctiněves má 379 obyvatel a ničím se neliší od tuctů jiných českých vesniček. Ani ten pivovar z ní nedělá nic extra, minipivovarů jsou v Česku doslova stovky. Každopádně pojďme sestoupit z Řípu do země oplývající mlékem, strdím, a samozřejmě pivem.

As @jjprac rightly pointed out in the comments of my previous post, the path leading to Ctiněves is steeper and rockier than the one from Roudnice. However, it still makes for an easy trek, as Říp Hill only stands about 200 meters higher than the surrounding fields you'll encounter once you pass through a forest with a rather magical vibe.

Jak včera poznamenal @jjprac, cesta ze Ctiněvsi je strmější a kamenitější než ta z Roudnice. Ale stále ještě je to celkem jednoduchý trek, koneckonců, Říp má převýšení jen asi 200 metrů nad okolními poli. Mezi nimi půjdeme, ale napřed je třeba sejít z kopce a překonat les, který působí tak trochu mysticky.

After reaching the lowlands, the path becomes a straight shot. I couldn't help but pause and snap some photos of Říp, a former volcano and a significant symbol of Czech national identity.

Pod Řípem už je cesta rovná. Ale občas jsem se ohlédl a udělal pár fotek bývalé sopky, která je důležitým symbolem naší národní identity.

Spring suits the Czech countryside great, so this part of our journey was pleasant, though we grew increasingly hungry and thirsty for beer. Luckily, the microbrewery was only an hour's walk from the peak.

Jaro českému venkovu sluší. Tenhle úsek byl příjemný, i když už nám začalo kručet v břiše, a hlavně jsme dostali pořádnou pivní žízeň. Pivovar je naštěstí jen asi hodinku cesty od rotundy.

Once you arrive in Ctiněves, be careful not to fall into a trap set for unsuspecting travelers. The Forefather Czech's restaurant, Hostinec U Praotce Čecha, is a place to avoid. They only serve a subpar Gambrinus and an average, overpriced Pilsner Urquell. I'm certain even the actual Forefather Czech would pass on this place, as the Podřípský rodinný minipivovar is just 200 meters further down the road.

Ve Ctiněvsi je třeba dát si pozor na záludně nastraženou past, hostinec U Praotce Čecha. Tady dostanete jen mizerný Gambrinus nebo přinejlepším průměrnou, ale vzhledem ke kvalitě předraženou Plzeň. Jsem si jistý, že i skutečný Praotec Čech by tohle pochybné místo přešel a pokračoval asi dvě stě metrů dál, až do Podřipského rodinného minipivovaru.

Currently, the building of Podřipský is undergoing reconstruction, so it may not be the most visually appealing to visitors, mainly bikers and hikers. However, I don't believe in judging books by their covers or breweries by their façades. What truly matters is what they offer. Books provide enlightenment, while breweries serve… well, beer enlightenment :)

Podřipský minipivovar je zrovna v rekonstrukci, takže nevypadá nijak přitažlivě. Ale knihy není radno soudit podle přebalu a pivovary podle fasády, důležité je, aby měly co nabídnout. Knihy povznášejí ducha, no a pivovary... Ty svým způsobem taky :)

As soon as I entered the brewery, I was struck by the intense and omnipresent smell of aromatic hops. It was clear that a new batch was being brewed. Family breweries like this one are typically tiny, often occupying just the ground floor and cellars of a family house while the family resides upstairs. Podřipský seems to be the case.

Hned ve dveřích mě do nosu praštila aromatická vůně chmele, byla úplně všude. Ne náhodou, zrovna se vařila další várka. Rodinné pivovary jako tenhle jsou vesměs maličké, většinou jsou v přízemí a sklepě rodinného domu, přičemž ona rodina bydlí nahoře. Tohle je zřejmě přesně ten případ.

The brewmaster seemed a bit tense, running back and forth to make notes and check on the tanks. So, I figured it wasn't the best time to interview about the current batch and instead focused on sampling what had already been brewed. Together with my girlfriend, we tried three different beers on the spot and bought one bottle to take with us as what my friends from the US call "road fuel" - beer to sustain us during the rest of our trek.

Sládek měl napilno a vypadal trochu nervózně, pobíhal tam a zpátky, dělal si poznámky a kontroloval tanky. A tak jsem si nechal zajít chuť na to, že bych ho otravoval zvídavými dotazy o vařeném pivu a jal se ochutnávat to už uvařené. S T. jsme si dali tři různé kousky a na cestu dál přibalili jedno lahvové. Kamarádi ze Států tomu říkají "road fuel".

When it comes to sampling beer at a microbrewery, it's hard to go wrong. And in this case, all three beers we tried were exceptional. The 11° Czech Lager, in particular, stood out to me as a well-balanced beer that Forefather Czech might have been looking for as he led his tribe to Bohemia. The beer had a slightly intense maltiness followed by a rich, hoppy taste which didn't become too bitter. It was incredibly smooth and refreshing, which was exactly what I needed after our hike.

Když ochutnáváte pivo v minipivovaru, těžko si vyberete špatně. Taky v tomhle případě byla všechna tři piva skvělá. Jedenáctka ležák je dobře vyvážené pivo, kvůli kterému by mohl Praotec Čech přivést naše předky do Polabí. V pivu se snoubila poctivá sladová sladkost s bohatým chmelovým aroma, které ale nebylo až příliš hořké. Hodně pitelné a osvěžující pivo, přesně to, co jsem po absolvované túře potřeboval.

Red Ales are not common in the Czech Republic. Unlike dark beers, this style owes its distinct reddish color to red hops rather than malt. In this particular Red Ale, the malt notes were less prominent and the hops shone through, giving the beer a mix of bitter and fruity flavors. Around the middle of each sip was a subtle hint of caramel that added a nice touch. I'm not sure how the Irish, where Red Ale originates, would feel about this particular one, but I thought it was really good.

Red Ale není úplně typický styl, který by se tu vařil ve velkém. Na rozdíl od tmavých piv nemá jeho načervenalou barvu na svědomí slad, ale červený chmel. V tomhle případě nebyly sladové tóny cítit skoro vůbec, snad kromě lehkých karamelových tónů v těle piva. Naopak chmely vystupovaly, a tak měl Red Ale ten správný mix hořkých a ovocných chutí. Nevím, jak by se na něj tvářili Irové, kteří tenhle styl vymysleli, ale mně přišlo fakt dobré.

During a brief conversation the brewer had with a local regular, I gathered that he was a bit surprised by the color of this Ale, as it wasn't supposed to have amber color. However, with the dim lighting inside the brewery, please take any photos of mine with a grain of salt. The strongest beer on tap was very fruity and incredibly bitter, as is fitting for a strong ale. The taste was really distinctive, with American hops imparting a slightly sour citrus flavor. Of the three beers we tried, I enjoyed it the least, but that's not to say it wasn't good. It just didn't quite fit my current mood.

Z několika vět, které si sládek vyměnil s místním štamgastem, jsem pochopil, že byl lehce překvapený z barvy tohohle Ale, neměla být jantarová. Ale moje fotky berte s rezervou, v pivovaru nebylo moc světla. Nejsilnější naražené pivo bylo hodně ovocné, a hlavně hodně hořké. Takový by silný Ale měl být. Z chuti hodně vystupovaly typické americké chmely, které pivu dodávaly lehce nakyslé citrusové tóny. Ze tří kousků, které jsme ochutnal, mi tohle pivo chutnalo nejméně, ale to vůbec neznamená, že nebylo dobré. Jen se mi prostě netrefilo do nálady.

I couldn't resist taking some Weizenbier with me before leaving the brewery. I've expressed my love for wheat beers before, so it's no surprise I had to try this one. However, I must say that this type of beer doesn't fully showcase its potential when consumed straight from the bottle. To fully appreciate its flavor profile requires proper pouring. So i will avoid rating it this time. I just have to mention I detected a subtle, yet rare bitterness in its body, but it was still very refreshing and helped us power through the last 8 kilometers to make it in time for our train back to Prague.

Za svého vztahu k pšeničným pivům už jsme se tu párkrát vyznával, a tak by vás nemělo překvapit, že jsem si na cestu namísto Monte přibalil lahvový Weizenbier. Jasně, tohle pivo těžko ukáže svůj potenciál, když ho pijete přímo z lahve. Mělo by být správně čepované, aby se plně rozvinuly jeho chuť a vůně. A tak se tentokrát do hodnocení pouštět nebudu. Jen zmíním, že mě v jeho těle překvapila mírná nezvyklá hořkost, ale jinak bylo osvěžující a pomohlo nám překonat zbývajících asi 8 kilometrů na vlak zpátky do Prahy.
