My evening with Barbara

Ohh - Barbara

Na, not what you are thinking.

The friendly Beerlover doesn’t write about this human stuff. ;-)

Hey Hive Family
enjoy a good beer
and let us travel the world again

St. Barbara Sterk Blond

A Miner’s Treasure in a Glass as they might call this beer. Naaa - no blockchain miner story, just the old school stuff.

What a beer 🍺

Where do I even begin? This Belgium beer doesn’t just introduce itself; it marches in, shakes your hand, and steals your attention.

With a sturdy 8.5% ABV, it’s not one of those beers you drink without noticing.

But what surprised me most was how smooth and refined it was despite its strength. The first sip hit me with a gentle sweetness, like honey drizzled on a freshly baked pear tart. Then came a burst of fruitiness – apricots, maybe a hint of orange zest.

Here’s where it gets fun: just as I thought it might lean into dessert territory, a crisp, spicy edge kicked in. Coriander? White pepper? Whatever it was, it worked. The finish was dry and lingering, the kind that keeps your palate entertained long after the glass is empty.

The special “Something” of barbara

Yeah - what makes this beer so special?

For me, it’s the story it tells. St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners, gives this brew its name, and you can feel that history in every sip.

IMG_1183.jpeg

It‘s not just a beer; it’s a nod to generations of hardworking miners who toiled underground.

Brouwerij Kompel has managed to capture both the strength and resilience of those miners and their moments of well-deserved relaxation.

This beer isn’t just made to be drunk; it’s made to be savored, preferably with friends and a few good stories about the past.

The design

Let’s talk about the bottle design, because honestly, it deserves a moment of appreciation.

IMG_1182.jpeg

The label features St. Barbara herself, standing proud with a golden halo that practically glows. This design isn’t flashy, but it doesn’t need to be. Deep reds and rich golds dominate the color scheme, giving it a timeless elegance. It’s the kind of bottle you don’t just recycle – you admire it, maybe even keep it as a souvenir. It’s understated but confident, just like the beer inside.

The Brewery and Its Location

Brouwerij Kompel, based in Maasmechelen, Belgium, has roots as deep as the coal mines that inspired its name. “Kompel” is a term used for a mining buddy, and the brewery proudly pays tribute to the hardworking miners who shaped the region’s history. Maasmechelen itself is a fascinating blend of industrial grit and natural beauty, with the Hoge Kempen National Park right around the corner. Walking through the town, you get a sense of its history – from the old mining sites to the stories the locals still share.

And this brewery? It’s carrying that legacy forward, crafting beers that honor the past while tasting like something built for the future.

Final Thoughts

St. Barbara Sterk Blond is a drinkable piece of history. It’s strong, yes, but also refined, balanced, and full of character.

For me, this isn’t just something to sip; it’s something to experience. Every glass feels like a little celebration of strength, resilience, and the moments we take to appreciate life.

IMG_1188.jpeg

Would I recommend it? In a heartbeat. It’s the kind of beer you’d want to share with someone who loves a good story as much as a good brew.

So, here’s to Brouwerij Kompel for creating something truly special – and to St. Barbara, who’s probably raising her own glass somewhere right now. Cheers!

St. Barbara Sterk Blond is a drinkable piece of history.

Working in the mines was exhausting and dangerous. When they got out, they certainly deserved something good.

Yeah 👍 and a !BEER

Cool - who did this?

I like to post more of the challenge and other stuff to netowrks outside Hive - mainly to get more users to Hive.

Sounds like a good one with an interesting history. At that strength you need to enjoy it for a while.

Prost 🍻

I think its a good beer but its not available here in our country I have tried imported beers when I was out of the country before and I will might check and taste some imported beers from imported sections in the Supermarket.

Have a look to the website of the brewery "Kompel" as they may show where to get it.

But I guess this is a small brand with limited market.

Hehe, if beer is called Barbora here in the Czech Republic, it's always dark and strong :))

;-)

A great country for beer
