Hola a todos... como todos saben estamos en época navideña, tiempo de paz, amor, alegría y familia. Muchos asocian estas festividades con nieve, decoraciones brillantes, dulces caseros, árboles de navidad, villancicos… sin embargo en mi país las cosas son algo distintas. Soy cubana, tierra llamada muchas veces el eterno verano por lo que hace mucho calor casi todo el año, en estas fechas la temperatura baja un poco más, pero nada que se compare a países como Estados Unidos por ejemplo, y por tanto en Cuba nunca hay nieve. Con un clima tropical como el nuestro no hay chimeneas donde poner calcetines de navidad, ni muñecos de nieve en la entrada de las casas, ni se respira ese aire invernal que muchos cuentan que adoran, y en muchas casas las típicas decoraciones con muchas luces no están presentes, sin embargo, sigue siendo un tiempo para estar con familia y amigos.

En Cuba la navidad no se centra en los regalos como en otros países, pues no se acostumbra a hacer obsequios, es una fecha solo para compartir con la Familia en la muy famosa Cena de Navidad donde el protagonista es el Cerdo. En las familias grandes es común asar un cerdo entero en púa, en donde este se adoba un día antes con diferentes especias y luego es atravesado por una vara gruesa ya sea de metal o de madera para asar lentamente en el carbón. Para acompañar no pueden faltar las viandas y vegetales como la yuca con mojo, los tomates, la col, los frijoles negros y el arroz, además de dulces como el pudin, el flan, las torrejas y los pasteles. Es una fiesta de sabor para compartir con nuestros seres queridos, donde los reencuentros es lo más esperado sobre todo si la familia se encuentra dispersa por el país.

En mi caso particular, mi familia proviene de Guantánamo en el oriente del país, pero hace muchos años vivimos en la capital, así que en estas fechas nos reunimos todos para compartir anécdotas y acontecimientos, conocer a los nuevos integrantes de la familia y recordar los que tristemente ya no están. Creo que la persona más recordada es mi abuela materna Elba, la que podría considerarse nuestra matriarca y guía, su partida ha sido de las más dolorosas pues gracias a ella tenemos ese espíritu de lucha que nos caracteriza, esas ganas de salir adelante a pesar de las dificultades, y que nos demostró que una mujer puede ser independiente y puede lograr lo que se proponga. Como dije anteriormente la navidad en Cuba no se trata de regalos, pero sin duda no hay mayor obsequio que estar unidos como familia, sin importar los problemas, las discusiones y desavenencias pues no hay mayor regalo que el amor que nos tenemos.

As I said before, Christmas in Cuba is not about gifts, but without a doubt there is no greater gift than being united as a family, regardless of the problems, discussions and disagreements because there is no greater gift than the love we have for each other.
