Keeping the pianos busy during the holidays

If "complete rest over the holidays" was something that those who don’t know me well would think I had, I would have to wake them out of that illusion because the truth is, I had an extra gig.

Or three. Maybe four... the number doesn’t even matter anymore. While normal people associate Christmas with being with family, doing nothing and having festive meals, this year I associated it with: Where is the piano? What is the repertoire? What key is this song in? 🎶

So, let’s start with Christmas. December 25th.

It is a Holy time; families all over the world are gathered. Everything is calm, the majority of people are having a day off or some longer holidays, and I? Guess! 😁 I played the piano at a private birthday party. Well, what can we do if a baby boy decides to come into this world exactly on Christmas Day? 🤷‍♀

Now, when he celebrated his birthday for the 50th time, I asked him isn't it cool to have a birthday on this festive day. Nope, he said. It means that as a child, I couldn't have gifts for Christmas AND for my birthday - it was all in one. I understood his "trouble".

Making that day even more festive for that family with my piano playing, I also reflected on my "troubles" and what work-life balance means. Somewhere between the songs Let it Snow and Happy Birthday, the conclusion wove itself into the tunes - I wouldn't change my profession for anything else.

At that moment, I think the universe clearly heard me and decided to give me a little more of this pleasure of playing on black and white keys. That same evening, while others had already taken up a horizontal position on the couch, I shifted myself to a hotel performance. Another location, the same pianist, half an hour of rest with a cup of tea. At this point, the piano bench could have been my home address, but then this red guy would be a family member of mine? 😯

Just a decoration around the piano, luckily.

Then came December 31st. New Year’s Eve, the final touch of the holiday season — perfect for being wrapped on the couch in the warmth of my home, while the lights on my modest Christmas tree would remind me of all the good and sparkling things of the whole year. Do you think I spent my night that way..?

Although being at home would be indeed perfect, I chose a very fancy place — the kind with a beautifully decorated dining area that whispers luxury. Actually, it chose me just two days before the event, but it is just a minor detail.

Now, the real plot twist: I had to play with a cellist.

But we had never met before. Not once. No rehearsal. 😱

Just a phone call, a few messages and some voice notes in those two days before the event. We had a constructive, rational discussion about the pieces we both know and can perform together, but we also decided to learn some new ones, because why not make life harder more interesting? 😂

Somehow, it worked. Because... of course it did, as it simply had to work. 🎶

Because being a musician also means turning chaotic notes into harmony and holidays into a fully booked performance schedule.

Now you have the right to ask me whether being a workaholic is a great thing. 😂

Maybe. But it is exciting and charming not to count just numbers, days or years, but also musical pieces and new people you meet at the performances.

And honestly? Someone has to keep the pianos busy during the holidays.😁✨

You are blessed to be able to work at what you love, only a small percentage of people can do that in their lives, so I would say you are lucky haha ❤️

I went to sleep during both celebrations 😂

I guess I am blessed with that indeed 😉, gracias @elbuhito 💜

Well, I also worked on that a bit so it can be this way 😁

Life of a musician basically means whatyou experiences end of last year. Never being able to celibrate in private all the holidays and special days we defined in our societies. Those are for musicians to perform. The positive side of this is that musicians can chill and relax on days others cannot because of their work schedules. Another positive element of being a musician is: One works in environments of positivity, mostly. Perhaps also very posiitve is, musicians dont have to go through to 'horror' of sitting with family at Xmas, perhaps people one doesnt like to much. No paremnt visiting and all that hahahahaha

...because why not make life harder more interesting? 😂

That little sentence is what I like most from your post. Trying to make things more difficult than it needs to be, is something I do very much relate to.

of sitting with family at Xmas

hahaha, true, true 😂
Also, my little family (ie your Hive dad and Hive-step bro) came that 25th with me and had their own fun around while waiting for me, so it was all fine. On 31 December, hubby and I celebrated the Australian New Year hahaha, we had the "dinner" at midday and celebrated that way the New Year's Eve during the day 😂

is something I do very much relate to.

So you inherited that from me too, hijo Eduardo? 😂

celebrated the Australian New Year

Perrrfect alternative! 🥳

you inherited that from me too, hijo Eduardo?

¡Obviamente mamá! 😆

You my dear are one of the lucky ones in this world (as was I), earning a living doing something you love. Kind of like "a hobby for which I get well rewarded" I used to say.

Passion will never be beaten. keep doing what you love.

Exactly, you know the feeling very well then! 😇
Although we can adapt to many circumstances and do whatever to earn the living if it is needed, I can't imagine myself in any other field that doesn't include piano/music.

Wow, what a whirlwind of a holiday season! 🎹 I love how you turned what most people see as “rest time” into a full-on musical adventure. That's what I'd do too haha 🤭

It’s inspiring to see someone fully embrace their craft, even when the holidays are “supposed” to be chill. Definitely makes me appreciate the magic of music even more! ✨🎶

Yeah, a musical adventure it was, but that is what I love doing so it was a pleasure to play in different places. Thank you for your comment, @yugadi, and I wish you a Happy New Year, if possible, full of music 🎶 ;)

Good afternoon, @mipiano. I did find it very strange that a child was born on Christmas. But putting that aside, it doesn't surprise me at all that you love your profession. It must be very satisfying to evoke beautiful emotions in listeners.

It also doesn't surprise me that the experience with the cellist went perfectly, without a rehearsal. It's clear that musicians speak the same language.

Happy New Year!

Good evening @enraizar, every day of the year is a good day to be born but yeah, when you are a child and celebrate Christmas and your own birthday at the same day then you usually don't receive twice the amount of gifts 😂
I am sure you also like your profession and that it is not "difficult" to do it when you see positive results in your clients/listeners. The same here 😉

The experience with the cellist was good, but it also involved two full days of arranging lists of pieces, versions, matching the right key, type of music we would need and practising. Which also means some new songs on the repertoire 😃
Btw, he doesn't speak Spanish, he came from Kiev a few months ago but you are right - musicians speak the same language - musical language! 😉

Se me olvidó poner en el post que toqué también el día 1 de enero. Bueno, hoy también lo de siempre de los domingos 😂

Good afternoon @mipiano. You have caught me, I also have a profession that moves emotions and I like it.

I don't know if you'll read this comment today or tomorrow; wish you a great night and touch many souls with your notes.

A very big hug.

Good night then @enraizar, I am reading the comment now 😁

a profession that moves emotions

🙌

😀🤗🤗🤗

💤

Hasta mañana 👋 descansa 🫂

I was reading you and thinking... my goodness what a stress! So many nerves, so much stress... and I thought, .... if it happens to me I die! But it must happen often, right? The places are beautiful and thank goodness that Mrs. Father Christmas had a gnome to help her!

Everything went perfect because you are a genius!!!!🤗

Mrs. Father Christmas had a gnome to help her!

Hahaha, true!

The gnome was there, tempted to dance while listening to the piano 😂 and take part in the performance haha
You remmeber that red couch I showed you in one comment? I had a place to rest, don't worry 😁 it was not hard to do what I like, although I was a bit stressed indeed, about how things would go with the cellist without rehearsal and without knowing him, but it was good. 😇

That makes me happy... I would be crazy with stress hahaha I do remember that sofa!

I am not surprised! When you're a performer you have to keep us mere mortals entertained, right?
Nice to be in demand but also would have been nice to spend more laidback times over the holidays💜

You are very right, dear @lizelle, having a bit more time to rest over the holidays would be good; however, I can't complain about having work and what a wonderful one (at least I enjoy it a lot 😉 and hope to continue in the same way in 2026 💜)

This locstions even at winter time looks warm and beautiful. Loved this

The balance between work and personal life is a constant dance. Sometimes, life presents us with opportunities that we cannot pass up, and although choosing to work instead of resting may seem like a burden, for you it is a privilege to be able to share your talent and make moments memorable.

So, while others relax on the sofa, you choose the elegance of a place that whispers luxury and the thrill of bringing music to those who appreciate it. This journey is not just a series of commitments; it is a celebration of life itself, of the connections we create and the passion that drives us.

Wow I can't take my to that beautiful decoration, I guess it's a Christmas eve's.
