Greetings, dear friends and colleagues, I hope you had a happy holiday with your family.

Today I want to share with you how I spend every December, when I return home to Maracaibo to see my mom, my siblings, nephews, and other relatives. Although I have been living in another state for years, about 500 kilometers away, the desire to share these special days with my loved ones always drives me to make the trip, regardless of the distance or the hours on the road.

Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes cómo la paso cada diciembre, cuando me toca volver a casa, a Maracaibo, a ver a mi mamá, a mis hermanos, sobrinos y demás familiares, aunque hacen años vivo en otro estado del país, a unos 500 kilómetros de distancia aproximadamente, el deseo de compartir estas fechas tan especiales con los míos, siempre me impulsa a emprender el viaje, sin importar la distancia ni las horas en carretera.

This year, as always with God leading the way, we left at night, after finishing up with passengers, loaded with suitcases and full of excitement. As we drove along the highway in the early morning, we took advantage of the opportunity to sleep for a while, listening to Christmas music at a low volume, knowing that we were getting closer and closer to seeing our beloved old lady.

Este año, como siempre, con Dios por delante, salimos en horas de la noche, al terminar de pasajeros, cargado de maletas y mucha emoción, mientras avanzábamos por la carretera, en la madrugada aprovechamos a dormir un rato, escuchando música navideña con un suave volumen, sabiendo que cada vez nos faltaba menos para ver a nuestra amada viejita.

At dawn, when we were closer to our destination, we encountered heavy traffic as we approached the iconic bridge over Lake Maracaibo. It turned out that maintenance work was being carried out and only one lane was open. Traffic was controlled in turns, with one lane for those going one way and another for those coming the other way. Although at first we thought it would be a nuisance, it turned out to be one of the best moments of the trip.

Al amanecer, cuando ya estábamos más cerca de nuestro destino, nos encontramos con una gran congestión vehicular al llegar al emblemático Puente sobre el Lago de Maracaibo, resulta que estaban realizando trabajos de mantenimiento y solo había una vía habilitada, el tráfico era controlado por turnos, un rato para los que iban y otro para los que venían, aunque al principio pensamos que sería una molestia, resultó ser uno de los momentos más calidad del viaje.

From the bus, we could see a huge oil tanker passing under the bridge. It was a scene I had never seen before, although I must admit it scared me a little, because many years ago one of these ships broke this bridge in two. To be exact, this happened in 06 de Abril de 1964But thank God nothing happened. Some drivers, defying the rules, got out of their vehicles to take photos and selfies. It has always been a dream of mine and my children's to be able to get out on the bridge and capture that moment with a photo, but we know it is prohibited for safety reasons. Still, seeing others do it made us dream of that moment.

Desde el autobús, pudimos observar un enorme barco petrolero atravesando el puente, fue una escena que jamás había visto, aunque les confieso que me dió algo de miedo, porque hacen mucho años atrás uno de estos barcos, partió este puente en dos, para ser exactos esto ocurrió el 06 de Abril de 1964 Pero gracias a Dios nada paso, algunos conductores, desafiando las normas, se bajaron de sus vehículos para tomar fotos y selfies, siempre ha sido un anhelo de mis hijos y mío propio, poder bajarnos en el puente y capturar ese instante con una foto, pero sabemos que está prohibido por razones de seguridad, pero igual, el ver a otros hacerlo nos hizo soñar con ese momento.

We stayed there for almost an hour, taking our time, enjoying the lake scenery and, of course, the gaitas he played. One of them, the classic "Cuando voy a Maracaibo" (When I go to Maracaibo), is like an anthem that sums up the feeling of returning home to Maracaibo.

Durante casi una hora estuvimos allí, sin prisa, disfrutando del paisaje del lago y por supuesto, de las gaitas que entonaba, una de ellas, la clásica “Cuando voy a Maracaibo”, está gaita es como un himno que resume el sentimiento de regresar a Maracaibo.

Finally, the traffic moved forward and we crossed the bridge with hearts full of joy. Arriving in Maracaibo is always a celebration, but this trip had a special touch. It was a journey full of excitement, landscapes, and moments that will remain etched in our memories forever.

Finalmente, el tráfico avanzó y cruzamos el puente con el corazón lleno de alegría, llegar a Maracaibo siempre es una fiesta, pero este viaje tuvo un toque especial, fue una travesía llena de emoción, paisajes y momentos que quedarán grabados en nuestra memoria para siempre.
