Ese día entramos a una capilla muy cerca del Vaticano, con el lindo detalle de que se encontraba una mitra perteneciente al Papa Francisco. Para mí fue como un gesto de despedida cargado de cariño, una especie de guiño final de esta tierra que tanto me regaló. Fue imposible no recordar nuestro primer día, cuando visitamos su tumba y todo el viaje apenas comenzaba. Cerrar el recorrido con ese detalle hizo que todo se sintiera bastante significativo.
That day we entered a chapel very close to the Vatican, with the nice detail that there was a miter belonging to Pope Francis. For me, it was like a farewell gesture full of affection, a kind of final nod from this land that had given me so much. It was impossible not to remember our first day, when we visited his tomb and the whole trip was just beginning. Ending the tour with that detail made everything feel quite meaningful.
Después fuimos a comer, ya sin los tickets del jubileo sino con nuestro propio dinero, y elegimos algo que sabíamos que nunca falla: una rica lasaña y una buena pasta. Ese almuerzo tuvo un sabor especial, no solo por lo delicioso de la comida italiana, sino porque era nuestro último en Roma. Lo disfrutamos despacio, hablando de los mejores momentos del viaje, riéndonos de anécdotas y tratando, sin decirlo, de estirar el tiempo un poquito más antes de volver a la rutina.
Then we went to lunch, no longer using our jubilee tickets but our own money, and we chose something we knew would never disappoint: delicious lasagna and good pasta. That lunch had a special flavor, not only because of the delicious Italian food, but because it was our last in Rome. We enjoyed it slowly, talking about the best moments of the trip, laughing at anecdotes and trying, without saying it, to stretch out the time a little longer before returning to our routine.
Felices y agradecidos por todo lo vivido, nos tomamos una foto en el Vaticano. En esa imagen siento que quedó guardada no solo una sonrisa, sino el cansancio bonito de los peregrinos, el asombro acumulado de tantos días intensos y la emoción de haber tocado lugares que siempre vimos desde lejos. Es una foto simple, pero cada vez que la miro siento que revive el corazón del viaje entero.
Happy and grateful for everything we had experienced, we took a photo at the Vatican. In that image, I feel that not only a smile was captured, but also the beautiful exhaustion of the pilgrims, the accumulated wonder of so many intense days, and the excitement of having visited places we had always seen from afar. It's a simple photo, but every time I look at it, I feel the heart of the entire trip come alive again.
Nos fuimos al aeropuerto en tren, y curiosamente descubrimos que también tenía una capilla. Me llamó mucho la atención que no había velas tradicionales; imagino que por seguridad. En cambio, tenían unas velas electrónicas que se encendían al dejar un aporte económico. Me pareció un detalle interesante y moderno, pero al mismo tiempo conservaba ese espacio de silencio y oración que a tantos viajeros les hace falta antes de partir.
We went to the airport by train, and interestingly discovered that it also had a chapel. I was struck by the fact that there were no traditional candles; I imagine this was for safety reasons. Instead, they had electronic candles that lit up when you made a financial contribution. I found this an interesting and modern touch, but at the same time it preserved that space for silence and prayer that so many travelers need before departure.
Avanzar en el aeropuerto fue bastante sencillo, sobre todo porque íbamos a tomar un vuelo dentro de la Unión Europea. Esta vez tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer un poco mejor sus espacios, ya que cuando llegamos de madrugada no habíamos podido apreciar lo bonito que era. La primera vez literalmente nos bajamos del avión, caminamos unos pasos, recogimos las maletas y en cuestión de minutos ya estábamos afuera. En cambio, ahora pude observar las tiendas, obras de arte y mucho más.
Getting through the airport was quite easy, especially since we were taking a flight within the European Union. This time we had the opportunity to get to know the airport a little better, since when we arrived in the early morning we hadn't been able to appreciate how beautiful it was. The first time, we literally got off the plane, walked a few steps, picked up our bags, and within minutes we were outside. This time, however, I was able to look at the shops, artwork, and much more.
Mientras esperábamos, nos compramos un gelato riquísimo, y me encantó que el local estuviera decorado con muchos gelatitos. Era una decoración tierna y divertida, perfecta para quienes amamos lo visual y los detalles, ese helado fue una dulce despedida de Italia.
While we waited, we bought some delicious gelato, and I loved that the place was decorated with lots of little gelatos. It was a cute and fun decoration, perfect for those of us who love visuals and details. That ice cream was a sweet farewell to Italy.
Finalmente llegó el momento de abordar nuestro avión, que curiosamente no tenía el logo de Ryanair, sino que estaba decorado con una abeja gigante. Nos dio mucha risa porque parecía más un avión sacado de una caricatura que un vuelo comercial.
Finally, it was time to board our plane, which, curiously, did not have the Ryanair logo, but was decorated with a giant bee. It made us laugh because it looked more like a plane out of a cartoon than a commercial flight.
