My first knife cleanup in the Knives Community!!!

in Knives4 years ago (edited)

Yesterday I made a post about a knife that I had cleaned up, and I was turned onto this community from my mate @galenkp! He mentioned this was a bonza community. He knows I like to get pissed on knives. Did I use that slang right? Haha

Anyway, I love make, creating, and working on knives. I have also recently been working on restoring axes.

Much like the knife I posted about yesterday, I found this knife at an abandoned house in Northern Michigan. I found a small bucket with several knives inside, all in weathered and fairly damaged condition.

This is a small no name knife that has a this narrow blade and a stacked leather handle. The finish on the handle was dried and cracked, and the metal was dirty and covered in years of misuse. Let's start with the finished images first, it might make for a nicer thumbnail!

As you can see it is just a small and handy knife. Just about 8 inches long. The sheath is a worn leather that was missing a clasp. I am using a cleverly placed elastic hair tie, which works unbelievably well.

The before pictures though. You can see the wear on it.

You can really see the damage on the handle. It is almost like a plastic coating that was peeling off. I sanded that all off and added a bit of oil.

I have carried this knife for alot of farm work. There is something very simple about it, and it carries great. I would use it for basic farm chores. A bitnof a knock around knife.

That is all for today. I hope you are all carrying something awesome!

Be well

Bonza use of Aussie slang cobber, and welcome to the Knives community.

Haha great! Nailed it!

Seems like some of my old bangers get more use than the pretty ones! I used to have a nice Kabar with stacked leather handle several decades ago, it was one of my favorites. It was stolen at some point along with a nice little skinner in my late teens.

Kabars are great knives! Too bad it was stolen.

I know the feeling, I had a whole set of professional chef knifes stolen by some wankers I had to work with, after my aprenticeship.
Genuine Ka-Bars are really expensive now. I bought a new USMC Anniversery Edition whatever thingy a few years ago, for $150 or so. Original WW2 in good condition can cost even more.
Or you can get one from China for $15... :)

That's what my first hunting knife looked like. I gave it to my son.

It is a good knife. Very comfortable to carry. Does he still have it?

Yes. I have a small collection of knives. One of them is a small hunting k=nife my oldest son found in the waters of the Puget Sound. He restored it, had to remove a LOT of metal from it, and made a sheath out of pvc pipe. It's pretty cool. I also still have the pocket knife my parents gave me when I was 12.

Wow, that looks very ... used. Like its been sharpened a million times. Was it not rusted at all? Stainless maybe?

Great work, cleaned up nicely. I'm going to take a crack at fixing up one of my old Grayman knives that was accidentally left outside in the shed for a few winters in a row. They're durable, but the winters can be brutal.
