Cut into a block in a mango tree trunk, the canoes of Mayotte do not have the finesse of those of Madagascar but carried and carry still a little fishermen in the lagoon. Of course, they are often used because a lagoon prevents the sea from forming in an oceanic way.But the lagoon of Mayotte is not a lake either, and it takes a certain courage sometimes religious to take to the sea on board these single-beam boats. Over time, the engines have arrived, the fibre boats with, and now the so-called "offshore" fishing is hardly a main activity for pirogues. A small fishing for squid in the evening, a fishing for rock fish in good weather or simply to escape his wife after an argument (!), the pirogues continue to be used! |
