The OG
So, a few years ago there used to exist an app on Steem called Utopian. On the utopian.io platform, contributors to open source projects were rewarded with the cryptocurrency, STEEM if their submissions followed certain guidelines.
IMO, this was an excellent idea. However, it failed to work out and from my understanding this was due to funding and planning issues.
One of the core problems with Utopian, imo, is that it was around before tokens were able to be created. So, their rewards were issued with upvotes from the Utopian account which received large delegations from STINC and some other whales. When this dried up, I guess so did Utopian.
Reviving this idea
I still think rewarding open source contributions, tutorials, and other open creative work is an excellent idea. I'm surprised no one has tried to tackle this on Hive yet.
So, I'm going to be doing some research into getting a project/community like this started.
The success of LeoFinance leads me to believe that a similar project based on programming and open source could also be successful in it's own little niche.
I myself am a software engineer. I mostly do freelance and contract work. I have experience with quite a few languages, but most of my work has been with Ruby, Dart, and Crystal.
If anyone out there would be interested in collaborating on this sort of project, shoot me a message on Discord @ nolyoi#4646. I'll mainly be looking for other programmers that would be interested in contributing to the project. But, if you have other skills you could offer, please reach out as well!
I'm just putting the idea out there for now. To see who may be interested and what the consensus on reviving this type of project is.
My goal isn't to rebuild Utopian. But, to build something with the same underlying idea of rewarding open source and creative work.
What are your thoughts on this? Does anyone remember Utopian? If so, do you think it's something that should be pursued again? Why or why not?
