My entry for CCC's Streetart Contest #219 Keith Haring in Amsterdam

in StreetArt6 days ago

In Amsterdam-West, on the grounds of the Centrale Groothandelsmarkt, one of the few remaining murals by Keith Haring can be found on the western facade of a cold storage facility and former depot of the Stedelijk Museum. Haring created this mural during his solo exhibition at the Stedelijk in March 1986. Since the 1990s, it had been obscured by an aluminum wall installed for insulation purposes.

Due to imminent demolition, there were plans to relocate the mural to Museumplein, which turned out to be technically unfeasible.
As a result, efforts are being made to find a new purpose for the building. In conjunction with the development plans for the Market Quarter, a proposal emerged to make the artwork visible again.

On June 20, 2018, the panels concealing the mural were removed, allowing it to be seen once more after nearly thirty years. The artwork was restored a few years later. The mural by Keith Haring is now partially visible from the public road along Willem de Zwijgerlaan.

For the same exhibition, Haring also painted a large transparent canvas, known as the velum, which was displayed in the stairwell of the central hall at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
It has since been incorporated into the museum's collection and was rehung in the stairwell after restoration in October 2017. Additionally, during his time working with the Stedelijk, Haring painted on the lift doors of the art academy in Utrecht following a lecture he gave there for studentes.
I have had the privilige to study there for two years and enjoy the artwork every day. Very inspiring.

Other murals by Haring can be found in various locations, including the casino in Knokke, the Necker Children's Hospital in Paris, a blind side wall of a church in Pisa, and a basketball court in New York. There is also a bronze triptych by Haring in a side chapel of Église Saint-Eustache in Paris, gifted by the Spirit Foundation, which was established in 1978 by John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Shortly before his death, Haring founded a foundation—the Keith Haring Foundation—which now oversees his legacy by organizing international exhibitions of his collection, managing an (online) archive, verifying the authenticity of his work, and selling products from The Pop Shop. The foundation also funds projects related to education, AIDS awareness, and the restoration of Haring's artwork.

I didn't know that Keith Haring had done murals. Really cool to have made this work visible again. Is this wall going to be destroyed or is it going to be saved? Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.

Enjoy your day
