Greetings friends. The other day I was walking home from work along one of the city streets. As I passed by a monument, almost by chance, I came across some art hidden inside this work.

It is not a mural, nor is it graffiti or painted art, rather it is a work embedded in the floor composed of four designs made of mosaic (I think that is what it is called). Below you can see the monument in question.

Saludos amigos. El otro día estuve caminando de regreso del trabajo por una de las calles de la ciudad. Al pasar por un monumento, casi por casualidad, me topé con un arte escondido dentro de esta obra.

No es un mural ni tampoco un grafiti o un arte pintado, más bien es una obra incrustada en el piso compuesta por cuatro diseños hechos de mosaico (creo que así se le dice). A continuación pueden ver el monumento en cuestión.

The location of this monument is in the bocayá park, a small park in the city.

It is decorated with various busts and several statements that can be read at a glance. One of them says “To Simón Bolivar, liberator of five nations and victor in the battle of Ibarra”.

In addition, it is interesting to observe this kind of obelisk because in the upper part there is a fight between a lion and a Condor, which is the National bird of Ecuador. I imagine that these two sculptures of such imposing beasts have a certain symbolism.

La ubicación de este monumento es en el parque bocayá, un pequeño parque de la ciudad.

Está decorada con diversos bustos y varios enunciados que se pueden leer a simple vista. Uno de ellos dice lo siguiente "A Simón Bolivar, libertador de cinco naciones y vencedor en la batalla de Ibarra".

Además, es interesante observar esta suerte de obelisco porque en la parte superior se encuentra una lucha entre un león y un Condor, que es el ave Nacional de ecuador. Imagino que tiene cierto simbolismo estas dos esculturas de tales bestias tan imponentes.

As it is a composite art, I will show it in parts. The first one is a representation of the Battle of Ibarra. As you can see it is a mosaic art, as I think it is called, where it portrays what happened on July 17, 1823 in the Ibarra of those years, the same city where I am now.

Como es un arte compuesto, lo mostraré por partes. El primero es uno que hace una representación de La Batalla de Ibarra. Como pueden ver es una arte en mosaico, como creo que se llama en donde se retrata lo que ocurrió el 17 de Julio de 1823 en la Ibarra de aquellos años, misma ciudad en la que estoy actualmente.

This other part is one that shows the inhabitants of the area in those years, where the tradition of the fairs that are still held today in the city began, called fair a set of food stalls where all kinds of agricultural and traditional products are traded. As you can see in the art, this is how it began.

Esta otra parte es una en donde se muestra a los habitantes de la zona en aquellos años, donde comenzó la tradición de las ferias que hoy en día se siguen haciendo en la ciudad, llámese feria un conjunto de puestos de alimentos en donde se comercia todo tipo de productos agrícolas y tradicionales. Como se ve en el arte, así inició.

One that goes back much further in time. This work represents what would become the foundation of Ibarra in 1606. In fact in the writing that is to the left it is spoken that there was placed a thick wood symbol of the authority of the Spanish crown, something represented in the work.

Uno que se remonta mucho más atrás en el tiempo. En esta obra se representa lo que vendría a ser la fundación de Ibarra en los años 1606. De hecho en el escrito que está a la izquierda se habla de que allí se colocó un grueso madero símbolo de la autoridad de la corona española, algo representado en la obra.

Finally, another of the things illustrated in these mosaics is a historical moment that goes back even further, known as the battle of Yahuarcocha, a battle that occurred on the shores of a well-known lagoon here in Ibarra. It relates that during that battle the lagoon was dyed red with blood, hence the name Yahuarcocha, which means “Lagoon of blood”.

Finalmente, otra de las cosas ilustradas en estos mosaicos es un momento histórico que se remonta aún más atrás, conocido como la batalla de Yahuarcocha, una batalla que ocurrió a orillas de una laguna muy conocida aquí en Ibarra. Relata que durante esa batalla la laguna se tiño de rojo por la sangre, de ahí que se llame Yahuarcocha, que significa "Laguna de sangre".

Well friends, that's all for now. This is an uncommon street art, in fact it's not quite traditional because it's not what you usually see around here, but it's in the urban area of the city so I thought it was interesting to share it with you, considering the history that encompasses this set of works.
