Thursday Island and Seisia, Queensland

in TravelFeed2 years ago

Exploring Thursday Island for the day was pretty exciting. We didn't book a tour, just took the ferry over from Seisia on Australia's mainland. With 6 young children there was no way we could have walked around the island to see everything, so we called a taxi. The older gentlemen that was driving the taxi was born on Thursday Island and had lived there his entire life. So we asked if he could show us around the island. It cost us $50 all up but was good to hear some true local knowledge and even a few jokes along the way.

Along the way to Thursday Island, oh that glorious colour!!

Our first stop on the island was the world war ii Canons and bunkers, what an interesting part of history.

After we had an unofficial tour we were dropped off at local pub for a feed. Afterward we made our way to the museum. We were so incredibly blessed to be there at the right time for a small concert that some of the locals beautifully performed. Their songs told stories of the Islands history. We all enjoyed the cultural experience, unfortunately I was enjoying it that much I didn't think to take a photo, especially of the beautiful bright colourful clothing they wore.

The Ferry ride back to the mainland was bumpy to start with. We sat outside at the front of the boat and enjoyed the spraying ocean water onto our faces as the front of the boat crashed into the waves. Life is certainly what you make it. Yes we are incredibly blessed to have such amazing opportunities and experiences, travelling is certainly a lifestyle, we all love it, but it's definitely not for everyone.

Back at Seisia, the sunsets are glorious, the squeals of laughter and excitement as the children jump in off the jetty; despite there being giant sharks and a resident crocodile close by. Family mob getting together, fishing, hunting, swimming and just like where we are originally from in Broome Western Australia the locals also take pictures of the sunsets because each new day is just as stunning as the one before.

These two places are so diverse and rich in history. The colours are stunning and the lifestyle ruggard but relaxed.

Beautiful spot. Would be nice to spend a week on the island and explore more.
