Runic Stones in Denmark!

in TravelFeed2 years ago

I now crossed over to Denmark after having traveled to Norway and Sweden

Since then I encountered a viking fest here and have now discovered a magical place...

It starts with the Rune Stones of Jelling located in the middle of Denmark. These are massive stones from the 10th century AD. The older and smaller of the two stones was raised by King Gorm the Old in memory of his wife Thyra. The larger of the two stones was raised by King Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth, in memory of his parents, celebrating his conquest of Denmark and Norway, and his conversion of the Danes to Christianity. This conversion to Christianity is a very interesting historical fact and shows how deeply entwined religions and cultures can be and marks the starting point of Denmark's Chrsitianization. I was lucky enough to have visited these stones before they were put into a glass casing, although this was the right thing to do as the elements are constantly eroding these stones.

The houses here are quite beautiful often having large lawns. The people here also like to raise their national flags although I have often seen other depictions. Seems like a great place to live... and then there are often little lakes nearby and the occasional sheep!

The next day I traveled a bit further by train and got off to see some some more stones... Although these stones were different. These were not rune stones per se, but "normal" stones that had been arranged in a symbolic significance. At first glance, standing on these grasslands one might just see some stones. But on a closer look one starts to see some patterns!

Here you can see it more clearly: a ship! Or I guess that is what I saw, perhaps you see something else... If it is meant to symbolize a ship, the people here arranged these stones for some special significance. Why? Maybe to simply recreate some vehicles of the time, but probably there is more to it. In all likelihood there was some religious meaning attached to these stones and how they were arranged. Ships are often seen as carrying the dead to the other realm after one dies (like in Egypt). Could something similar be the case here?

I think the place here is mostly open for personal interpretation as the creation of this stone field goes back many thousands of years (although dating is difficult). It is clear that carrying and arranging them in this manner was no easy task. While they may look small, they are quite heavy and it would have taken a communal effort to place them here.

I've never really seen a real life Rune stone before, not even a real life picture. All my knowledge of it was limited to the refences I came across during playing certain video games. Seeing one for the first time really made me wish I looked into it more in the past. It looks like a past craved out from the history and it's without a doubt just mind blowing.

The stones in the field did caught my attention for a bit, and I can see the mentioned ship rock formation clearly XD But what surprised me more is to find out that these places are actually burial ground. The big, pointy shaped rocks used on mens grave and round, soft and little rocks used on womens. A really fascinating history fact.

this is a great fact I forgot! Thanks for pointing it out :)

There are quite a few rune stones in scandinavia; you should visit there!

Those circles look like place holders like if you were going to Camp with bunch of friends. I'm going to bet they had a party here!

haha, yeah could be! It's always interesting and fun to speculate about these things as no one really knows the answer :)

Well honestly that's what I would do and as you guys all get together everybody starts to make their area really nice. So this definitely would be the beginnings of a foundation for your little camping spot

You've explored so many places 😍 this one looks great

thank you! Do you go for traveling as well?

Oh, it's so cool that people remember their history and keep artifacts from it.

well I guess these stones are hard to hide, although I guess with time they get covered in dirt. Now that I am thinking about it, perhaps one could date them like that? What about your place, do you also have artifacts like this?

It have been awhile since I heard the word Rune Stones. The meaning of Rune comes from the Germanic word for “mystery” or “secret. I have a set of rune stones that can be used for divination…not large rocks like in your photos but about and inch or so in length with markings on them. I never did master all the meanings.

Interesting arrangement of the field of stones. Hard to imagine what was the significance to place them like that. Often these arrangements are blamed on aliens or arranged so aliens can see them from the sky.

The homes look beautiful. Cute photo of the sheep.

I guess every stone that has a meaning and is marked with a symbol could be a rune stone. I suppose they also exist in every culture in some way. You are right, the type of rune stones you have is often used for these kinds of things; and again I would argue that it would be comparable to e.g. the I Ching used in China etc. People like to know about the future it seems :)

I think "blaming" aliens for all of the past artifacts is definitely not useful as it just puts the whole past in one pot so to speak. Although I am definitely open to the idea for some of the bigger constructions/mysteries...

The first thing that came to my mind was the sheep lying and standing in the grass. Or some other animal grazing in the grass. Atmospheric places anyway!
!CTP

it is hard to say what kind of animals they are now that I look at the picture again! Sheep/cow hybird? :D

😅 💪🔥🔥🔥

Beautiful photos, @tobetada :-) Yes, the boat shape is very interesting in Celtic, Nordic and other cultures: it can be seen also as a vesica piscis (the sacred geometry often used in churches, and older ritual and cultural ways, which represents the cross-over point between two realities - like, where one circle and another overlap: the point of meeting, of shared reality or of the 'sweet spot') - which can relate also to the sacred feminine and the yoni - the yoni is often symbolised in ancient art as a vesica piscis: the yoni, the birth canal and the cervix are all intimately literal and metaphorical representations of moving from one world into the other - from the inner to the outer, from the world of water to the 'dry land'. The older cultures were much more in equilibrium with the deep and sacred feminine, whereas the modern cultures have very much oppressed, occulted and diminished the feminine. There are epic movements in the study of the sacred feminine unfolding right now, and in our collective womb conscious; this is revealing far more about, e.g. historical artifacts which previously have been interpreted very dryly and 'intellectually'.

thanks for this wonderful interpretation! Now that you say it, it makes a lot of sense :)
