Starting the day at sunrise is always special, but when you’re heading to the Gate of Heaven at Lempuyang Temple, it’s even more so. This iconic spot in Bali, with its stunning backdrop of Mount Agung, is a must-visit for anyone wanting to capture the island’s s beauty.
My day began early, picking up my clients in Ubud at 7:30 AM. We set off on a two-and-a-half-hour drive through Bali’s scenic landscapes. Though long, the drive was filled with conversations about the temple’s significance and the famous photo opportunity that awaited us.
When we finally arrived at the temple parking area, we took a shuttle to the entrance, which cost 90,000 rupiah. The ride was short but offered a taste of the beautiful scenery that lay ahead. At the entrance, I purchased tickets for my clients—50,000 per person—while I, as their guide, didn’t need one. We then put on our sarongs, an essential part of respecting the temple’s customs, and began our walk.
We made a quick stop at a restaurant along the way with a perfect view of Mount Agung. My clients took the opportunity to snap a few photos with the mountain in the background. After a brief restroom break, we continued our walk, which took just five minutes to reach the iconic Gate of Heaven.
As expected, the gate’s first yard was bustling with people eagerly waiting for their turn to capture the perfect shot. We joined the queue with number 260, but the line moved slowly, as they were only at around 170. Despite the three-hour wait, my clients were excited and well-prepared, having rehearsed their poses to make the most of their brief time in front of the camera.
When our number was finally called, my clients quickly got into position while the photographer captured the moment. With Mount Agung as the backdrop, their photos turned out beautifully. Although the process was quick, their preparation paid off, and they were thrilled with the results.
The journey to the Gate of Heaven was a mix of patience, excitement, and breathtaking views. My clients left with smiles and beautiful photos, a reminder of why Bali is a place like no other.
