Yowie park, Kilcoy, Queensland, Australia.

in TravelFeedlast month

About an hours drive north of Brisbane is the small country town of Kilcoy. It has a population just under 2000 people but that does not count the Yowie’s. A Yowie is Australia’s version of Americas big foot. There has been many sightings over the years which started in the 1800s. The only recent report I could find was a new paper and Television interview from way back in 1979. It went something like two students camping out in the bush had an encounter with a large hairy brown creature. Funny how with all the modern technology and phone cameras all the sightings seemed to have dropped right off. Either way fact of fiction! It’s good for these small towns to have some sort of tourist attraction. This place is also home to Yowie parkrun, we did it with one of our local running groups back in 2020. We were driving past it last weekend on our way to another far flung parkrun further afield. When we stopped for a wee break and a stretch it reminded me I never did a post for this area.

Event 60, 7 March 2020. 5 km in 22:39 3rd place overall. I have not been able to run this well for a while now but I still have not given up.

Yowie parkrun has some local legendary Australian runners as well, Sarah Kyter on the right was the first woman to run around Australia and Ron Grant did many epic long distance runs round Australia the first ever, and ran across the Simpson Desert. Photo credit to parkrun volunteer photographer. Sarah owed and ran the cafe we had breakfast at afterwards where I got to have a chat with Ron.

There were a few older historic building in the park as well a great spot for a walk or parkrun.
