One of my favorite places in Campeche, MERCADO!

A friend of mine is a chef, and he used to take me to the market in Campeche. They say that food is culture, and I was reminded that food is directly related to the culture of a country. The Campeche market was lined with brightly colored foodstuffs, many of which were unique to the tropics, such as avocados, bananas, sugar cane, oranges, and other foods that you don't find in markets in Osaka. I was there during the “Festival of the Dead” and the market was really bustling.

友人が料理人と言うこともあって、よくカンペチェの市場に連れて行ってもらいました。食は文化というますが、食はその国の文化に直結していると改めて感じました。カンペチェ市場は鮮やかな色とりどりの食材が並んでいて、熱帯地方独特の食材である、アボカド、バナナ、サトウキビ、オレンジ、など大阪の市場にはない食材がたくさん並んでいました。私が行った時期は「死者の祭り」の期間でもあって、市場は本当に賑やかでした。

The market was divided into sections according to what they were selling, such as a section for butcher shops, a section for fish shops, and a section for vegetable shops. When I entered the market, I saw a vigorous market vendor calling out loudly for customers, and a lady carrying a shopping basket was negotiating with the market vendors about prices. The fish were being cut up and the women were deftly unloading the fish they had purchased. The same was true at the butcher's. My friend gave detailed instructions on the parts of the meat, and he would cut the meat into small pieces according to size. I felt very nostalgic because I could still see the old-fashioned market where people talk and negotiate with each other to buy and sell ingredients, which is no longer the case in Osaka. When I was a child, there were still shopping streets in my hometown of Osaka, but now most markets in Japan have disappeared and have been replaced by large malls. They are convenient, but no longer as vibrant as the Campeche markets.

市場は、肉屋が集まる区画、魚屋が集まる区画、野菜屋が集まる区画など、売ってる物によって区画が分かれていました。市場に入ると威勢のある市場の商人が大きな声を出してお客さんを呼び込んでいたり、買い物かごを抱えてきたおばさんが市場の店の人と価格の交渉などをしている様でした。魚は買ったらそこでさばいてくれるようで、手際よく購入した魚をおろしていました。肉屋さんも同じで、肉の部位を細かく指示したら大きさなどに合わせて細かく切ってくれます。本当に人と人が会話し交渉しながら食材などを売り買いする市場がまだ残っていて、大阪にはもうなくなってしまった昔ながらの市場の姿があって、すごく懐かしく思いました。私の子供の頃はまだまだ商店街が私の地元、大阪にも残っていたのですが、今、日本ではほとんどの市場は姿を消して、大型モールに変わっていきました。便利ではありますが、カンペチェ市場の様な活気はなくなってしまいました。

Since I was there during the Festival of the Dead, they were selling a lot of sweets with skeleton motifs. Also, flower shops were busy. During this time of the year, florists decorate graves and home altars with flowers. When I passed by the flower shop, a young florist was making a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The flowers were beautifully arranged in bunches, just like Japanese ikebana. In no time at all, the beautiful flowers were being displayed and sold. The market was really full of energy and vitality.

私が行ったのは死者の祭りの時期だったと言うこともあって、骸骨のモティーフを使ったお菓子をたくさん売っていました。それと、花屋さんが忙しくしていました。この時期は花屋さんはお墓や家にある祭壇にお花を飾る様です。花屋の前に通った時、若い花屋の職人さんが花のブーケをきれいに作っていました。日本の生け花の様にきれいに花を束ねていきます。そして、あっという間にできたきれいな花たちは店頭に並べられ売られていきます。本当に市場にはエネルギーがあって、活気で満ち溢れていました。

The stores selling spices and seasonings were really interesting and I wanted to see a lot of them, but could not take the time to do so. It was just so hot inside the market that I was drenched in sweat. But I really enjoyed the lively market, discovering something new every time I went there. I wanted to buy some local honey in plastic bottles to take home, but in the end I didn't because I thought it might be confiscated by the censors. I now think that it would have been a good idea to have them make mead with the honey I bought in Campeche.

香辛料や調味料を売っている店は本当に興味深くて、色々と見たかったのですが時間をかけてみることはできませんでした。市場の中はとにかく暑くて、汗びっしょりになりました。でも、本当に活気のある市場は行くたびに新しい発見があって、本当に楽しかったです。ペットボトルに入った地元のハチミツを買って帰りたかったのですが、もしかしたら検閲で没収されると思って結局は購入しませんでした。カンペチェで買った蜂蜜を使って、ミードを作ってもらうというのもいい案だったなぁと今になって思っています。

The rooftop of the market is a parking lot, with a panoramic view of the Gulf of Mexico, and in a different direction, the city of Campeche. The market is located in a really good location, with a beautiful view of the churches in the old town. Campeche is not a big resort city like Cancun. However, there are many places where you can experience the local culture, and because it is not a resort area, there are still many places to enjoy, and it was really interesting and enjoyable to get a glimpse into the lives of the people of Campeche.

市場の屋上は駐車場になっていて、メキシコ湾が一面できます、そして違う方面はカンペチェ市内が一望できます。旧市街の教会もきれいに見えて、本当に立地がいいところに市場があります。カンペチェはカンクンの様に大きなリゾート都市ではありません。でも、こういった地元の文化に触れあう場所はたくさんあって、リゾート地ではないがゆえに楽しめる場所がまだまだたくさん残っていて、そこで生活しているカンペチェ市民の生活を垣間見ることが出来て本当に興味深く、そして楽しい時間を過ごすことができました。
