When you think of Mexico and in particular Yucatán cenotes, Mayan ruins, hot weather and beaches might come to your mind. And of course all of these things can be found all around Yucatán.
However the beach might disappoint you. The shore is full of Sargasso, which is basically algae.
So many Sargasso in the shore brings a lot of insects. So as you can imagine taking a swim in the beach isn’t very pleasant because of the insects and because instead of swimming in water you will most definitely be swimming in algae.
However, from what I’ve seen, locals try to remove some sargasso from the shore and the water. In some small areas there might be some space to swim, but in most places the local’s efforts are not enough to keep the Sargasso off the beach.
So if you ever visit Yucatán around August I wouldn’t recommend going to the beach. Instead, visit cenotes and lagoons, which are much prettier and can be even warmer than the beach.
As you can see the water is much clearer and you can actually swim.
However, from what I’ve heard the beach around Christmas time is quite nice.
Good recommendation! But really... cenotes were warmer than the see? !CTP
Not really, but lagoons definitely are.
indeed. I was wondering already how it could be possible that underground water (which is supposed to keep more or less a stable temperature could be warmer than see water in a warm climate... !CTP
