At the Foot of Pratumnak Hill: Discovering Cosy Beach

in TravelFeed6 days ago

Hello everyone. Recently we took a stroll around Cosy Beach, a small and charming hidden gem located in Pattaya, Thailand, at the foot of Pratumnak Hill. It’s a peaceful escape from the bustling center of Pattaya, offering a more tranquil atmosphere. Perfect for when you want to unwind away from the crowds. To reach Cosy Beach, you follow the winding roads descending from Pratumnak Hill. Since tuk-tuks don’t typically come here directly, it’s more convenient to take a taxi, a motorcycle taxi or drive yourself. The beach is surrounded by lush greenery and feels like a small cove. The water here is cleaner compared to some of Pattaya’s other beaches. With its calm vibe, stunning views and small restaurants and cafés nearby, Cosy Beach is an ideal spot to relax and enjoy your time.

We walked along the main tourist street in the area. This road, though not very long, has everything you might need for living or leisure. It’s lined with massage parlors, small restaurants and shops. Since we visited around noon, the weather was hot and there weren’t too many people around.

We stumbled upon a small street vendor stall. A favorite type of spot for me. One highlight of the area is the presence of a 7-Eleven, where you can find nearly everything you need. There’s also a Tops market here, which replaced the old Family Mart. We grabbed some cold water to cool off. The street food stalls offer a variety of dishes: curries, meatballs, fish, omelets... One stall looked especially inviting, but since we weren’t hungry, we decided to continue exploring.

During our summer visit, the area was quieter. Now, with the season ending, there are more people around. As the sun sets, the streets get busier. There’s even a fruit vendor island nearby. For instance, durian is priced at 320 baht here, compared to 220 baht elsewhere. Prices are reasonable overall. Pre-packaged, sliced fruits are also available, though prices can vary. For example, three mangoes might cost around 100 baht.

One distinct feature of Cosy Beach is its inaccessibility by tuk-tuks since it’s located at a dead end between the city center and Tenom. You’ll need to drive yourself or take a taxi. Once you’re here, though, there’s hardly a reason to leave. It’s easily one of the nicest beaches in the area. Plus, street food stalls are abundant, so you’ll never go hungry.

Apart from hotels, Cosy Beach also has many apartment complexes, where you can rent a unit for about a month. Most offer facilities like swimming pools and gyms, with many apartments boasting sea views. Laundry services are also available. Washing costs about 40-50 baht and dryers are conveniently located right next to them.

The cafés here cater to different tastes, offering dishes like solyanka soup for 100 baht, borscht for 80 baht and pelmeni for 100 baht. Prices are quite reasonable. You’ll also find dishes like shashlik and Tom Yum. Another 7-Eleven is nearby, along with plenty of fruit stalls. Some selling products for 25 baht, while others might charge 50 baht for the same items.

One of the most popular hotels here is the Cozy Beach Hotel, located right along the shoreline with sea-view rooms. Many new fruit stalls and currency exchange offices have also opened, giving the area a lively vibe. It’s great to see the development, with new cafés and restaurants popping up. Prices generally remain fair.

The beach scenery is breathtaking. Since the Pratumnak area is on a hill, the beaches are located below. Getting to Cosy Beach involves descending a long slope, but the view from the top is spectacular. Each visit brings new surprises, as the area continues to improve. New cafés and bakeries have opened, making it even more delightful.

Most tourists here come from Europe, but many residents are expats, often retirees. It’s common to see older folks relaxing by the pool. A standard sight in this hilly area. The beach itself isn’t crowded, as most people opt to stay by their pools. A few clifftop restaurants offer incredible views, like the Sky Gallery, which is especially impressive. Watching the sunset from here is a magical experience.

If you want to enjoy the sunset at Sky Gallery, it’s best to make a reservation in advance. The best tables with views are often fully booked. There’s a 1,000-baht reservation fee, which is credited towards your meal. The place gets quite crowded at sunset, so booking ahead is a good idea. They’ve even brought sand to the venue, creating a beach-like feel despite being on a hill.

Another notable spot here is the Chocolate Factory, a large venue with an industrial design. While we haven’t tried their desserts yet, the menu suggests average pricing for coffee and sweets. The interior is rather simple, which is why we haven’t visited yet, but the view is lovely. The Chocolate Factory spans a large area and if you eat there, you’ll need to show your receipt at the parking exit to avoid a 100-baht fee.

The Three Mermaids is another standout restaurant in the area. Its prices are comparable to the Chocolate Factory, but the interior here is far more impressive. Upon entering, you're greeted by a statue and the most sought-after spots inside are the nests. These nest-like seating areas are spacious and perfect for group meals, but they fill up quickly. It's recommended to arrive around 5:30 PM to settle in and place an order before the breathtaking sunset between 6:20 and 6:40 PM.

The nest design is fascinating. Unlike anything I've seen before. Thailand's approach to safety is also quite unique. In some countries, a setup like this might not be possible due to stricter safety regulations, but here, individuals are expected to take responsibility for their own safety. Despite being perched at the edge of a cliff and serving alcoholic beverages, the design is bold and captivating.

On another level, there are trampolines, which I find intriguing. I'm not sure if you're allowed to sit on them, but they look well-maintained with padding in place, giving the impression that people relax there. Hopefully, at least the ropes are secure.

The view is absolutely stunning. Looking out over the beach area, umbrellas dot the landscape, but the view from the Sky Gallery is even more impressive. The water appears in layers of color: dark here, blue there and navy in another spot. As you head toward the restaurant past the Chocolate Factory, a turn marks the descent to the beach.

Walking a bit further down the street, there’s another access point to the beach. This beach is completely free and not affiliated with any hotel, though its gate closes in the evenings. Once, after staying to watch the sunset, we noticed it had closed by 9:00 PM. We had to climb back up to the restaurant, which turned out to be quite enjoyable, leading us to decide to have dinner there.

The beauty of the place was overwhelming the first time I visited. The greenery, the blue water and the sunlight illuminating everything. It was all simply breathtaking.

The steep descent to the beach is one of my favorite parts, as it’s colorful and allows you to immerse yourself in nature. While it’s a bit steep, it’s not frightening. As soon as you reach the bottom, you’re often greeted with offers of smoothies. From here, speedboats can take you to Koh Larn Island, with prices varying depending on the number of passengers.

The beach is sparsely populated. During the off-season, I think Wongamat Beach has the best sand: fine and light-colored, making the sea appear especially blue during the season. Occasionally, you might find some litter, such as pineapple wrappers, but overall, the area is quite clean.

Near the Oxygen Restaurant, there’s an interesting parking system where tickets aren’t checked, so you can park anywhere and head to other restaurants. The restaurant itself spans a large area and has a lovely ambiance in the evenings, with live music and warm lighting. The seaside tables are usually occupied, but you can often find empty ones in the farther corners. Large tables are also available for groups. On Saturday and Sunday evenings around 7 PM, there are fire shows, which add to the experience.

Some parts of the beach are rocky, so swimming isn’t allowed in those areas. Still, the region as a whole is gorgeous and worth exploring.

Another noteworthy spot is Lan Wood Stove, which likely serves excellent pizza. While I can’t recall if we’ve tried pizza here before, the menu and pricing are similar to its sister establishment. There are two menus: one for European cuisine and one for Thai dishes. Prices are as follows: soups range from 160-180 baht, oyster salad is 250 baht and pizzas are 285-325 baht: cheaper than the Chocolate Factory, where they’re around 500 baht. Pastas cost between 265-325 baht, while cocktails are 295-300 baht and non-alcoholic drinks are likely around 175 baht.

For dinner, we chose The Forest instead of Sky Gallery due to a group of tourists arriving. The menu was enticing and the forest views combined with evening lights made the atmosphere enchanting. In one corner of the restaurant, there’s a dessert section with prices between 145-165 baht, which seems reasonable. We opted for main dishes instead.

The restaurant has a bar-like vibe and sitting outside is pleasant, as the weather isn’t too hot. However, mosquitoes can be a bit of a nuisance.

The view is stunning and the atmosphere feels more comfortable than Sky Gallery, less crowded with more private spaces. There’s a second floor, used as a viewing area, but it was a bit wet due to rain. Descending the stairs, you’re treated to an incredible view of the beach and surrounding areas.

The menu includes both Thai and international cuisine. Thai dishes generally range from 150-200 baht, while fish dishes and salads can go up to 465 baht. For example, Massaman curry is a delicious choice. Mildly spiced and rich in flavor. Other options include various pastas and spaghetti. The drinks menu is sophisticated, with cocktails looking particularly tempting.

We tried the steak, which had a fantastic aroma: lightly spiced but very flavorful. It came with vegetable soup and flatbread on the side. Thai cuisine here carries influences from Indian and Chinese cooking, making the dishes rich and aromatic. The curry, while a bit spicy, was delightful. Overall we can recommend this restaurant for dinner. It offers beautiful views, a lovely ambiance and delicious food.

We ended our day at Cozy Beach with this delightful experience. If you’re looking for a relaxing day at the beach away from the crowds, Cozy Beach is the perfect choice.
