Tunisia is cut in half by a natural depression that runs inland from Gabès to beyond the Algerian border. This trough cradles a string of huge salt lakes called chott, forming a natural barrier to north-south travel. It also marks the boundary between the semi-arid steppes of central Tunisia and the true Sahara desert of the south.
The largest of these salt lakes, the Chott el Jerid, is also the largest in the Sahara. To the west and south of the chott is the Grand Erg Oriental, a vast ocean of shifting sand dunes, which are uninhabited with the exception of a few isolated oases.
