Guard Up ! The new trend in the Badman Dancehall Scene

It seems that songs about scamming are the way to break big in the Dancehall space. But add Obeah to that mix and it is a potent combination. Insideeus, a trending Dancehall act at the moment has found the perfect formula for new era bad man tune.

"Guard up" can be used to mean protect yourself in the literal sense but it also means to go to an Obeah worker (witch doctor ) and have your ring guarded by duppies ( spirits) who protect you from harm by giving you the right thoughts or by squeezing the ring on your finger to warn you of danger. This has been a big part of Jamaican culture in the underground scene for some time, but to hear it being promoted like this is something else.

While I do not condone any Obeah, scamming and violence, it really got me thinking how some songs can be so addictive with a negative message? The song easily gets stuck in your ram ready to be played.

After doing a quick search on the so called "guard rings" I actually found a website that offers such services. WOW. What is even more interesting is the trend of young artiste talking about the same topic and riding the wave. Be prepared for a lot of "guard ring wearers and fake Obeah men & women.

Do you believe in Obeah?
