Jesus on earth was of two parts - human and deity. Sometimes he displayed his human part, and other times his deity nature predominated.

The time he cried as recorded in John 11:35 was when he displayed his human nature. As a human being, Heb. 4:15 states that he was tempted like us, yet without sin. He felt our infirmities.

Now, when he walked on the water was when he displayed his divine nature. (Matthew 14:31). This was why he did not sink.

So, he cried when Lazarus died because it is natural for one to be hurt when one loses a friend to death. It shows a humane nature. Jesus as human had the same feeling and emotions like us, though he had full control over his emotions.

He felt hungry when he fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. That was why Satan tempted him to convert stones to bread. Matt. 4:2-3.

Also, he was thirsty as human. That was why he asked for water from the woman of Samaria (John 5:7).
