A large section of the population in the world today is well educated. They carry large degrees, speak fluent English, and belong to reputable professions, but some of them are not well versed with the Bible. This is one of the questions that have long troubled me. I have spent long pondering about it, and I knew that education in the world and knowledge of the Word of God are not necessarily one and the same. Some one might be a professor with science or history but might know nothing about the Bible since he or she has not even found time to read and respect it. According to the Bible, itself, it stated that, the knowledge of the holy, was understanding (Proverbs 9:10). This goes to show that it is not only the school that one can get true understanding, but also knowing God.
A major cause is the fact that most of the individuals are concerned with material success. They are on the run pursuing careers, money and recognition. During that, they lose spiritual development. I have already witnessed that there are some educated individuals who even assume that the Bible is outdated or not necessary. The Bible however records Hosea 4: 6, which says, my people are destroyed because they lacked knowledge. Such ignorance is not related to the fact that the Bible is a hard book to learn but their decision is not to learn it. I even used to believe that the Bible is meant to be read by pastors alone, but then I came to know that it is also aimed at every one.
Another reason is pride. There are also individuals who believe that they are learned people and therefore they have already known what matters. They will have faith or belief in human wisdom as compared to the wisdom of God. This is discouraged by the Bible in 1 Corinthians chapter 3 verse 19 when it says, for the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. As long as man does not humble himself, the Word of God can never come into his heart. I have also been taught that humility is the most important thing to get the Scriptures.
Finally, it is important to note that being a well-educated individual does not necessarily make him wise when it comes to spiritual issues. God and His Word are the source of true wisdom. Psalm 119: 105, says, Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And a light unto my path. Provided that more educated individuals would find time and read the Bible, their lives would be more meaningful and understood.
