Who are the giants mentioned in Genesis 6:4?//Mcgi Topic Review ( part 2)

The giants referred to in Genesis 6:4 were not ordinary human beings. According to the passage, they appeared as a result of a union between the “sons of God” and the “daughters of men.” Because of this unusual origin, these beings did not possess a normal human nature. They were described as mighty, strong, and renowned qualities that go beyond what we would expect from humans who simply grew abnormally tall due to hormonal imbalances. Instead of being weak, these giants were powerful and influential.

Let us look at the passage in Genesis:

When men began to multiply on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took wives for themselves. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not always strive with man, for he is flesh; his days shall be 120 years.”

In those days there were giants on the earth and also afterward when the sons of God went in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These children became mighty men of old, men of renown. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every imagination of his heart was continually evil.

From this narrative, it is clear that these giants were the offspring of a supernatural and human union. The “sons of God” mentioned here are understood by many scholars and readers to be angels. One of the reasons for this interpretation is God's own statement: “My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for he is flesh.” This contrast between spirit and flesh indicates that the sons of God were spiritual beings, not humans.

Throughout the Bible, angels are sometimes referred to as “sons of God,” reinforcing the idea that these beings were not earthly men but heavenly beings who took human wives.

In conclusion, the giants of Genesis 6:4 were extraordinary beings born from the union of angelic “sons of God” and human women. Their unusual strength and reputation set them apart from ordinary humanity, reflecting the spiritual and physical mixture that produced them.
