"Alte Donau"
This is my first post that I am sharing here... I just discovered this community yesterday and I thought of sharing my images. I went out today in the morning to have a routine lab check-up and I passed by the road parallel to this , stopped the car and parked on the side. The "Alte Donau" was completely empty since it was still early after 8:30 AM. Normally, there would be people hanging around and do sunbathing...today had been a bit cooler at 17°C. It has been a lot cooler the last days since over the last weekend we´ve had 35°C . I guess the peak of Summer is slowly nearing its end.
A place for relaxing...
A beautiful area to relax, swim , do sunbathing or make a pedal boat ride. This is one of the best places in Vienna to de -stressing after a busy week. I miss this area since we relocated to the next district about a year ago.
In the photo above, farther right is the bridge for the trains crossing the big Danube River and Donau Insel to and from the city of Vienna. The "Alte Donau" which had become an arm of the Donau Insel had been here long before the Donau Insel came to be. In the 70s, they have excavated and area parallel to the Big Danube to create a man made Island that is now a recreational area called Donau Insel where Events and open-air concerts are happening every Summer. The excavation parallel to the Big Danube was necessary to avoid flooding in the city.
Unfortunately, there are no Events whatsoever since the start of the Pandemic. On the other side of the train bridge is the "Wasserpark" [Waterpark] which have been there since the beginning of the 19th Century, a huge park intended for the birds and other fowls and for those visitors who want to do sports or bring their children to the playground. Other visitors simply want to sit on the banks and enjoy watching the birds.
To show the correlations of the three areas : The Big Danube is on the left of the Map and parallel to this is the Donau Insel (green and blue) The water at the Donau Insel is a still water where also locals swim. And the "Alte Donau" is at the right
The "Alte Donau" extends until the UN Headquarters and beyond, the area where the Revolving Tower is located. The water over there is very busy in Summer as there are many weekenders with their boats with white sails trying to have fun.
Well, that´s all for today...I hope you have enjoyed the images.
