We took Mika to the vet for her annual shots and wellness check. She gets very anxious at the vet ever since she was spayed. Now, she is not a very big fan of her visits there. She is panting so hard and whimpering while waiting to be seen sitting on my husband's lap.
I was glad that we were the only ones in the waiting area which kept her from getting overly excited seeing other dogs.
I loved this plaque hanging in the entranceway. Knowing that the doctors care so much for the animals gives one a sense of calm. The staff is amazing and always attentive and kind to each animal.
While waiting for the Doctor to enter the room, I found a tick on Mika's neck near her collar. It was very engorged and the doctor removed it and said he would do a Quant C6 test to see if she showed positive for Lyme disease.
Later that evening, we got a call from the doctor and she tested positive. We had to go back to the vet the following day to get a prescription which she has to take for one month.
I researched to see if there were any symptoms to watch for: sure enough she has shown three of the most common signs.
Dogs with Lyme disease may experience:
Lack of appetite. She is always eager to eat her meal twice a day. Recently, she has not wanted to eat and skips an entire day before eating again. Then some days only eats once which is not like her at all.
Decreased activity. There have been days when she did not want to play but instead lay in her bed a lot.
Painful, swollen joints with intermittent limping or lameness. This one is what concerned us the most. She would suddenly start limping for no reason and not put any weight on her front leg. We called the vet and he said that if she rested the pain would subside and she would be okay in a day or so. Which actually happened on three separate occasions in the past three weeks.
We're hoping that she doesn't have an issue with limping after the medicine is done. She won't be re-tested for Lymes until 6 months have passed.
Mika is in my lap getting ready for an afternoon nap. I picked up my phone to take a picture and she put her paw over her eyes.
I know she was just itching her nose, but the timing was perfect as if she did not want her photo taken.
Comfy-cozy in my lap while I read and have a glass of wine. I sure hope the medicine works to free her from the disease. It is so hard watching her suffer when she does not feel well, especially when she limps. Have any of you had one of your pets come down with Lyme disease? I would really like some input on your experiences.

Luckily, the vet gave her a test otherwise you wouldn’t know why she was not eating properly
Hope she’ll get well soon.
I'm glad he found the reason and she will be okay after the medicine. She seems better since starting on the pills. Thank you.
Good to know she’s the same lively girl and life is still full of fun!
Pliers are a real disaster. Now two of my dogs are being treated for babesiosis. They got infected despite the fact that they were treated with a special remedy. May Mika get well as soon as possible!
Oh no! Two of your dogs, wow, I hope they will be okay too. Mika is doing better since being on the medicine and she has been treated with the preventative meds too. I guess it is not always effective.
So very sorry about Mika's condition, I hope the medicines work for her and eases her pain.
