HANDLING CORRECTION

in Abundance Tribe3 years ago

Anyone who loves learning accepts correction, but a person who hates being corrected is stupid (Proverbs 12:1).

A person who refuses correction will end up poor and disgraced, but the one who accepts correction will be honored (Proverbs 13:18).

These two Bible verses reflect on how to take in correction. It speaks loudly on how one should humbly accept correction, especially when they are ready to learn. As the Bible verse says, a person who hates being corrected is stupid and will remain so.

One of the traits of the wise has always been to accept correction especially when they are wrong or make mistakes. It is even wiser to know that you can't be an island and cannot know all. That's why it's really so important that one is open to receive not just corrections but rebuke and reproof.

Three days ago, I made a mistake by sharing a plagiarised post verbatim and I was rebuked by the HiveWatchers... It came at a period when I was very happy with my progress here on Hive.

I had been blogging consistently for about 16 days and was seeing an exponential rise in the engagements and rewards on my post. So it was very hurtful that I lost all that due to a mistake.

Already, I sent an appeal to the HiveWatchers stating what happened and they did an investigation albeit they didn't do that well though. So according to them, I'm still guilty.

But while sending replies and waiting for their response, I reflected on my actions. And then I learned two things:

  1. Understanding your facts correctly and summarizing your information correctly really makes everything better. It makes you more trustworthy and allows you to learn to be more accurate in the future.
  2. No one enjoys being corrected, but it's worth a lot. I don't think it's wise not to listen when someone is trying to help you!

Although I'm of the school of thought that it will be easier to receive corrections if they can be given in a careful, uplifting, encouraging, and helpful way. But you really can't control others. You cannot get them to correct you in a way that is acceptable to you.

It turns out that it is much wise to accept the correction, regardless of the way it is given. And it's better to focus on receiving the correction than how it was given.

“Do not correct a mocker or he will hate you. Correct a wise man and he will love you. (Proverbs 9:8)

This has helped me to accept the punishment of the HiveWatchers. I know I was wrong, even though it wasn't an intentional attempt to plagiarise and I have come to rest with the decision. Presently, I expect a downvote from spaminator on this post as my appeal on the Discord channel hasn't been attended to but I have decided to continue blogging and hopefully sooner or later the blacklisting gets reversed.

You stole someone else's work and then lied about its source and having permission to use it. The person who actually wrote the article was contacted and said he did not know you or your friend and certainly gave no one permission to use his work.

This makes you a thief for stealing someone elses work and a liar, for then inventing a story...is this what the Bible teaches? Here you are again refusing to accept the truth or taking any responsibility.

You have a permanent blacklist. This does not stop you posting but you will always receive downvotes.

Accounts here cannot be deleted.

It's fine...

It certainly won't be forever though.

I guess I have learned my lessons.

Thanks for passing by...

It will be forever, that's what permanent means.

Hive Power Up Month - Feedback from day 15

wasn't an intentional attempt to plagiarise

You keep saying this.

But...You intentionally cut and pasted someone else's work calling it your own.

Saying it was unintentional is just another lie...Something the community has come to expect of you. You should be ashamed of yourself, but thinking about it, you, in your hubris, probably won't be. I mean, you show no remorse and have offered no apology to the community, as you should. Nope, you're just continuing to profess that your plagiarism was unintentional.

You lied.

That's what this is about.

You cheated.

That's what this is about.

You have harvested from the crop which you yourself sowed. Enjoy your bountiful harvest.

Ok...

I'm sorry for my actions and take full responsibility.

I accept every allegation. I stole the post without the consent of the owner, in an attempt to milk the blockchain.

I, therefore, tender my apologies and promise to refrain from such in the future...

Thank you for this - timely and well said!
I typed a whole paragraph and POOF! - it vanished - without a trace.
May we all be less critical of others, and more willing to listen to a list of our own shortcomings, provided our critics are not beating us up unjustly. I've gone on the defensive when under attack. It's not easy to take the high road, "consider the source," and be gracious and kind to our critics. Sometimes, it may not even be wise. The trick is to discern: when to turn the other cheek, when to thank a critic for a correction, and when to stand firm against an onslaught of unjust accusations.

Thanks again for this, @profgabs05.

Thank you so much for the kind words.

It's indeed very important everyone learns humility in correction.
