Barking, squabbling, splashing ... a colony of sea lions can make quite a ruckus!

In October I had the opportunity to film a colony lounging on the docks in the marina in Westport, Wash., on the Pacific Coast.

You can read about my daytrip to Westport, and see stills of the sea lions, in Sea Lions in Westport (PhotoFeed Contest - Wildlife).

I saw the video, and listening to the hullabaloo, made me think about the following, I would not like to live near those sea lions at all, I think that the noise is a bit disturbing, I don't know what you think.

I agree! I would not like to live near them. I like the sound, but it would be too much to hear them all the time. They're fascinating to hear on a visit, though.

What cute creatures, in many ways they are very similar to us humans. It would be very interesting to reflect on their nature by seeing them up close.

As the author of the film, surely you must have some thoughts on the subject.

Hmm. It was fascinating to see their desperate need to either hang on to their spot in the sun, or to get and find a spot in the sun. Certainly I could see that as an aspect of our humanity (see for example the craziness that goes on around Christmas shopping in the U.S.) ... then again, it's possible I'm just projecting when watching them. Who knows how different their brains and emotional worlds really are?

the nature of sea lions is an incomprehensible mystery, as is human nature itself. While we may understand ourselves, we cannot say the same for another human or creature.
