For episode 7 I had one of the most underated Hivesters I've come across, my friend Karina, better known as @young-boss-karin.
Our topic this time was "Weird and crazy shit we've come across". Check out part 1 here:
While part 1 focused on more positive or neutral things, Part 2 focuses on dangerous cults, homelessness, scamming and over-drinking. Of course it's not always comfortable or pleasant to talk about he negative aspects of a place, but through talking with people like Karina, I think it's obvious that there are lots of people who represent the good in humanity and that this country is worthy people's curiosty and understanding.
I hope that through episodes like this people from other countries realize they could easily make friends from Nigeria (or whatever other country we are focused on for that episode).
I was impressed with both of our abilities to come up with this stuff on the spot. We are not putting down any of these practices, just trying to find the ones which might be most shocking to those from other cultures.
This was fun, I hope to have her back soon. GO FOLLOW HER AT @young-boss-karin on Hive!

Here is a detailed summary article about the key topics discussed in this episode:
Navigating the Complexities of Life in Nigeria: Insights from a Firsthand Perspective
This episode provides a candid and eye-opening look into the realities of life in Nigeria, as shared by a local resident. The conversation covers a range of topics, from the prevalence of violence and crime to the challenges faced within the education system.
Unchecked Violence and Disturbing Normalcy
The host recounts several shocking incidents of violence that have become disturbingly commonplace in parts of Nigeria. From witnessing a bus driver physically assaulting and dragging a passenger, to coming across dead bodies lying on the streets that onlookers simply ignore, the level of casual brutality is deeply unsettling. The host explains that this type of unnecessary violence is all too common, with people often getting harassed or insulted for no reason, especially in public transportation. This has led the host to actively avoid certain areas and situations to minimize exposure to such disturbing occurrences.
Exploitative and Corrupt University System
One of the most alarming revelations is the rampant corruption and abuse of power within Nigeria's university system. The host describes a culture where professors brazenly demand sexual favors from female students in exchange for passing grades, and routinely fail students who refuse to pay bribes. This toxic environment is further exacerbated by a lack of oversight and accountability, with the administration often siding with the abusive professors. Students who dare to report such misconduct face the threat of being held back for years or even denied graduation altogether.
The Allure of Illicit Gains and the Struggle for Integrity
Amidst this bleak landscape, the host acknowledges the immense temptation for young Nigerians to turn to illegal activities, such as fraud, as a means of financial gain. Witnessing peers amass substantial wealth through unethical means while the host struggles to make an honest living can be demoralizing. However, the host expresses deep respect for those who manage to maintain their integrity and resist the lure of easy money, recognizing the immense personal fortitude required to do so.
Glimmers of Hope and the Power of Technology
Despite the overwhelming challenges, the host remains cautiously optimistic about the future, particularly with the rise of remote work and the increasing accessibility of global skills-building opportunities. The host believes that as more Nigerians acquire in-demand digital skills, they will have greater access to legitimate, well-paying jobs, providing an alternative to the temptation of illicit activities. This technological shift, combined with the resilience and decency of many young Nigerians, offers a glimmer of hope for a brighter future.
Overall, this episode provides a raw and unfiltered glimpse into the complex realities faced by those living in Nigeria. It serves as a sobering reminder of the immense obstacles that many must overcome, while also highlighting the remarkable strength of character exhibited by those who choose to navigate these challenges with integrity and determination.
