Everything is Culture. Show me your world 😉

in Cross Culture3 years ago (edited)

The Cross Culture community has introduced me to a bunch of wonderful people over the past two years. It’s nice to see the customs and lifestyles of different places and slowly get a feel for different people's lives.

I want to stress that this community is not just for sharing straight information about customs. I want hear your personal feelings about your society and the world at large. I want to know the things that make you and your friends unique in your society. I want to see your challenges and your dreams for yourself and the world.

Me and my people

Any topic relating to society is Cross Culture. Anything relating to work and life in a specific place, generation gaps, gender differences, changing cities and lifestyle, or anything that gives us a glimpse into the uniqueness of your life is Cross Culture.

The only real requirement of Cross Culture is that you make your posts for an international audience, whether you live in a village in India or in the suburbs of California. That just means being a little extra aware of when something needs an explanation, or asking questions to your audience about similarities or differences.

The purpose of this community is to understand each other better

Education, Politics, Music, Spirituality, Food, Psychology, Travel, War and Peace, Study, economics, all these topics and more…if you can help us see into your world or the world of people around you, that is Cross Culture.

I want to know YOU.

You might get my upvote if you share some pictures and description of a unique festival or clothing or food. But if you can share your own personal memories and experiences, tell me your story. THAT will get a full upvote, comment, a retweet and a follow.

A simple blog is ok, just try to remember that some things might benefit from explanation and context because your audience here is international and diverse.

This can be a date you went on with someone, or it can be some experience that is unique to a certain place.

One thing I have enjoyed reading about so far has been the program where Nigerians must live in another part of the country and do volunteer work. The posts usually include personal stories with details and how people felt about the experience.

Another thing I liked reading about was a family dinner which was much different from a family dinner the countries I have lived in before.

Try to be more observant and attentive to details which may reveal the way people around you think and live. Try to compare with other place in the world that you have seen on TV, or better yet in Hive blogs.

We want to know how you interact with the world. In the process you will likely find that your audience has become much more international and diverse.

Here are some ideas for posts that I’d love to read.

1 Stories about your relationships with friends from other tribes or ethnicities within your own country. The good and the bad is ok as long as you don’t spread hate.

2 Experiences with foreign people in your country. What were you thoughts of other countries growing up and did anything change after you met them.

3 Different kinds of people and social groups that exist within your society.

4 Things about another culture or your own culture that you can’t relate to (anything ok, just don’t spread hate)

5 Your struggle to accept different ideas and culture.

6 How your city has changed

7 How your family has changed

8 Your favorite places to go with your friends

9 Comparing your life to friends in another place, or to characters you saw in movies.

10 Questions you have for people in other countries about family, school, work, life…

11 Current or past Trends

12 Observations about people around you.

13 Your feelings about the world at large

14 childhood stories with some culture context.

15 Local news or social issue related

16 Language/Communication related

There are endless other things you can talk about in Cross Culture.

Just remember, relating it to your life and personal experience, memories and feelings is always more interesting than just giving us dry information. The more you put into your posts and interactions, the more you will get out of this place. You will find not only payout, but maybe even some lifelong friends on the other side of the world or some information that totally changes the way you see the world.

I love that I’ve met you all. Keep posting here and let’s get more familiar with each other in the Cross Culture discord

I guess I can say I fit into the cross culture community at last .

I am going to be posting about everything regarding the newest place I moved to for an internship program.

Yeah! Posts about that internship program helped me learn about the herdsmen in the north and some difference between different tribes, plus the difference in lifestyle between Lagos and more rural places.

This is great, 😂because sometimes I run out of ideas on what to post in the community. Last week, posted about juju music and my favorite musician. I had fun writing the post took me down the memory lane.

I truly agree with you, there lots of areas to explore in cross culture community, lots of them.

There will be lots of fun post to read and learn from. Thank you for this amazing opportunity. ☺️☺️

Looking forward to seeing what you share :-D

Gave this a reblog... There is a lot to share when it comes to experience on our relation or way of live. Culture goes beyond tradition, it is the way we live itself.

You have helped me understand a lot. Even the way we play guitar is culture...I guess one of these days I should write about how I found my soul family through music while I was traveling!

This open the gates of the community wider and allows for a wide ranger of users to share their posts here.
True everything is culture , because every we write is from our cultural perspective and the practices that exists in our country.
Thanks, I see another community opening up which will keep me active.

I am just as interested in how two people from the same city, ethnicity and religion can have a totally different culture in their home or company.

Truth is, this was always the premise but the word "culture" seems to make people think of tradition and last time I expressed encouraged opening up, we were brand new with few users. I think we will start to see a lot more interesting discussions here. It's already started, I am really happy @drrune moved his Rune Readings here, they always suck me in and are totally relevant to this theme of culture.

Much obliged, my friend! I always thought of Cross Culture just like you describe here, not only a place to share unique customs from many places, but also a gathering node for personal perspective, that we may use to connect with others from our own experiences with a goal of mutual enrichment!

We are almost always on the same page ;-)

That would be so true in a multicultural society as ours. Here we have a confluence of religions and cultures.
Yip may be the true global village we live in will be reflected in this community as well.
look forward to posting and reading posts from Hive Cross culture.

This Community allows people to get clear insight about what is happening in other part of the world. I like how it permits everyone to present their culture to the world for people to see.

For example, I know what I thought about Pakistans, but ever since I got to know them online, I realised that the image painted by media about these people is completely unrelated to their reality.

Nice getting this from you. The Community is already growing. More growth is on its way. ✌️

I feel the same way about Venezuela. I had a very different image from watching the news and hearing the worst of the currency crisis.

I hope my twitter outreach will bring in some people from Asia, Europe and North America too. Of course we'll stay tight with Hive Naija and maybe somehow we can come up with an idea to bring some people from other parts of Africa too.

What you are trying to do will help to make this world more interconnected. It would be nice to have the same level of information about a particular culture and country.

If everything goes well, this Community can be a place that reduces risk of assymmetric information about cultures

I think I already have what to write on after reading through this post and I am very sure it is worth time going through

I certainly put out a lot of ideas, but there are always more to come up with ;-)

This community is no doubt an opportunity to learn about people from far and wide. It is also an opportunity to clear misunderstanding and be closer. Culture is endless. It consists of each single unit of life. How we eat, talk, greet, sleep, so on and so forth.

Some days ago I was thinking I read stories here whereprom night is a normal cultural aspect but in my culture it is not acceptable by the majority. The literature helps us understand how the people look at the things in a particular culture and thus this community is specifically benefiting in this regard.

Thanks for the detailed explanation @selfhelp4trolls

Right? I'd love to hear more about situations like that from other culture, in detail. Prom night is not acceptable there? Not just unfamiliar but unacceptable? Which part of it is unacceptable?

Glad you are here :-D

Every part of prom night is unacceptable here. It is like people of opposite genders (who have no relationship with eachother) being together for a night function. It is not seen as a socially acceptable act. Moreover, it is likely to bring questions on the character of people especially women.

P.S. It may be happening among some very upper class families with liberal social circle but they would hardly form 1% of our society.

@selfhelp4trolls , I realized one thing writing this. The cross cultural community is not only for understanding other cultures but is also an opportunity to examine our own culture critically. I will surely write in it. Thanks.

I wonder which country you live in. I can only imagine a few country that are as you say in 2021, so our posts must give you some culture shock. Interesting. Hope its not overwhelming :-P If you ever have a question, feel free to ask

The cultural shocks will make us Rock 😁. The more we will talk, the more will we rock.
By the way, I am from Pakistan.

:-D Glad to know you and hope to learn more. and let's rock!

I like how your post gives an in-depth explanation of what cross culture is truly about. After reading I realized my thought of what the cross culture community is has been somewhat limited. Thank you for sharing!

Feel free to share more!

Ahaaa lucky me, I got to read this. Thanks for those many topics and there are more from where those came from? Cool 😊

I hardly post in this community except participating in its contests, that's bad of me 🙈

Lemme see what I can share from my side so you know more about my own side of the world - Nigeria 😏😒😂 missed feelings here 🤣

Yeah, a lot of people just show off their festivals, clothing and food. It's really cool! But actually, if the writer just acts as if their audience is from an unfamiliar place, daily blogs can be even more interesting. :-)

This is awesome. Truth is I use to think the community is just for Cultural events or maybe unique and diverse cultural practices, but then, thanks for diversifying and simplifying it. The Nigerian people for example have rich experiences that can be ascribe to how differently exposed they are. Telling the Nigerian story for example can be totally exhilarating to exotic audience, it's not totally beautiful though. Sometimes it can be sad and challenging.

Well done sir, it's been a while.

:-D Thanks for reading. Yeah, the word "culture" confuses some people. They thing it's something old and intentional, but getting comfortable in a variety of places helped me to see that culture is just daily stuff.

I remember going to some new friends house who happened to have grown up in my home country but we living abroad like me and they pulled out the PS4 controllers and asked which character I usually play as in some fighting game...I hadn't played games in 15 years and I told him that... "WHAT DO YOU DO!?!?" He couldn't believe it. THIS is culture. Even though we were from the same place and a similar family and moved to the same new place, we had such different culture.

I should make a series about this. " Everything is culture" coming right up ;-)

Aha thanks for the post’ must say I’m lucky to have read the post
