A Window On Arab Culture #04: "Ashura".

in Cross Culture3 years ago (edited)

Hello friends.

Today we are talking about another custom of Muslims, which is Ashura. The origin of this name goes back to the number ten, and by Ashura it means the tenth day of the first month in the alphabetical calendar, the month of Muharram.

The importance of Ashura

This day occupies a great place in the hearts of Muslims. On it, one of the greatest miracles by which Allah Almighty helped his Prophet Moses over Pharaoh, split the sea in front of Moses and those with him to walk through, then drowned Pharaoh and his soldiers.
As it happened on this day, a great event occurred in which Hussain, the grandson of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, was killed.

How do Muslims celebrate Ashura?

The most important thing that Muslims do on the day of Ashura is fasting and fasting means abstaining from eating, drinking and all desires from sunrise to sunset. It is desirable to do a lot of worship on this day in addition to giving alms to the poor.
Small celebrations are also held that gather family and relatives at the dining table at sunset.

The virtue of Ashura

Many Hadiths were narrated on the authority of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about the virtue of fasting on the day of Ashura, and they all agree that fasting on the day of Ashura expiates the sins of an entire year.

Fasting is a way to celebrate many religious occasions and I'm good glad to know that the same thing applies to Muslims.

Nice to read about Ashura as described by you.

Well Done

Muslims celebrate fasting on several occasions that we will learn about in the future, the most important of which is the Day of Arafa, it will be the topic of the next article.
